Spartans fundraiser honours Bathhurst athletes
The third annual Spartans 5km Fun Run/Walk taking place April 6 will honour the seven Bathurst High School basketball players who lost their lives earlier this year in an accident.
“This year’s edition of it we decided it would be really nice to dedicate it to the boys in red, in memory of the basketball players from Bathurst High School,” said North Queens Rural High School Physical Education Teacher Jeff Sylvester.
The Spartans 5km Fun Run/Walk was started by the athletic committee at North Queens Rural High School three years ago to raise money for North Queens athletic teams, he said.
Sylvester said participation has been increasing over the years.
“We’re really hoping this year we’ll get a good turn out again.”
Last year’s Spartans event raised about $2,000. More than 100 people took part.
Race Director Barry Fisher noted, “It’s been successful because the community has supported it.”
Everything will be red this year, with a little Bathurst High School logo on the side of the t-shirts, which are guaranteed to the first 70 registered people.
Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for students.
Students can also raise money through pledge sheets.
Following the race they will make a donation to the boys in red fund, said Sylvester.
