Mariners win Bent Division title
The Yarmouth Mariners are heading back to the Kent Cup.
Yarmouth won the Bent Division crown Saturday night in Yarmouth with a 6-0 win against Pictou to complete a 4-1 series win. The team now awaits the winner of the Meek Divison final series between Miramichi and Woodstock.
Ryan Penney led the Mariners with one goal and two assists.
Penney (game winner) opened the scoring at 6:59 to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Matt Duff scored 45 seconds later at 7:44 to extend the lead to 2-0 after the first period.
Brendon MacDonald (power play) scored at 7:04 to increase the lead to 3-0 after the second period. Alexandre Soucy (power play) scored at 1:18 to widen the lead to 4-0. Soucy (unassisted power play, second goal of game) scored at 8:23 to up the lead to 5-0. Danny Anger rounded out the scoring at 17:39.
Yarmouth went 3 for 6 on the power play while Pictou County went 0 for 3.
Dallas Ungurian stopped all 28 shots he faced for the shutout victory and looked sharp all night while Alexandre Quessy stopped 25 of 31 shots in the loss.
The Mariners will have home ice advantage in the final series. The winner will play for the Fred Page Cup in Pictou later this spring.
