Queens building permit fees and arena expenses
More repairs at arena

Having already spent $15,000 this year on repairs, the Queens Memorial Arena has asked Region of Queens Municipality to help cover the cost of another needed repair.
“They have had compressor problems, they have had one rebuilt,” said Mayor John Leefe.

It cost $12,000 to rebuild the first compressor plus fix the Zamboni machine.

A letter addressed to Region of Queens Municipal Council states the arena needs to repair a second compressor at a cost of $4,600 plus HST.

With just one compressor running, Mayor Leefe said it impacts their power bill.

The Region’s Committee of the Whole agreed March 11 to recommend to council to cover about $4,500 of the cost, he said.

“Council has made it very clear we will do anything we reasonably can to keep the arena functioning until Queens Place opens,” he added.

The new recreation facility will be open in the fall of 2010.

Building permit fees may increase

Building permit fees could increase as the Region of Queens Municipality compares its fees with other municipalities.

Mayor John Leefe said the fees have not changed since amalgamation.

A building permit for a 1,200 square foot one storey bungalow currently costs $111 in the Region of Queens Municipality.

In Kings County, a building permit costs $152 for the same type of house, he said.

Shelburne, Annapolis and Lunenburg municipalities charge between $130 and $145.

The mayor explained there are five building inspections required during the course of construction.

That means the building inspector has to be on the road a lot throughout Queens County.

“Which can eat up significant amounts of time,” he said.

The rising cost of fuel is also a factor.

A recommendation to increase the building permit fee will be coming back from staff, said the mayor.
