‘Canadian accents’ bends ears of Scottish schoolchildren
Last week’s story of students at Weymouth Consolidated School linking up with ‘e-pals’ in Scotland drew an excited response from their friends at a school in Blackness. For many youngsters, the audio slideshow was particularly interesting because they got to hear their friends’ voices—and their ‘Canadian accent’.
Here’s how the Scottish school children responded:
“I think it was really great seeing and listening to all our e-pals from Canada in the video. Hearing our friends read out our letters and our news out loud was cool! Writing to Jacob from a totally different continent seems really bizarre but exciting.” – Charlie P7
“It was funny when they read out Mrs. Richardson’s Burns poem and they didn’t know how to say it! It‘s fun finding out stuff from Devon as they do different things to us like what they do in the bad weather and the sports they like.” – Grant P7
“I am enjoying having a link and a friend in another country and finding out how different it is to over here. I really like to hear about how different the weather is and how many days they get off school because of snow. We don’t get that!” – Fraser P6
“I love writing to Josh because I like hearing about Canada and what it’s like there and what they do there and their hobbies and weather. Their school is very different to our wee school. The video was fun hearing the Rabbie Burns poem getting read out and seeing them type up their letters to us was cool.” – Matthew P6
“I like writing to Ethan because he’s sporty like me and he likes cars which I like too. I really liked the movie that we watched last week. It was funny to think they were so far away but there they were on the whiteboard in our class. I love to hear about their weather and the trips they go on.” – William W. P7
“Jonathan always tells me lots of news about him and we talk a lot but he’s a bit similar to me. We like the same hobbies and cars. I like to see photos of their veterans we don’t really have that in our school. It was fun seeing the movie to see them talking and moving and reading out our letters. They get just as excited as we do when the letters arrive!” – William M. P6
“I liked hearing the Canadian accents on the video and I enjoy having an e-pal. Nadia and I have lots in common. It’s fun to find out all about their school and the sort of stuff that they do in school.” – Joanna P6
“I like having an e-pal because it fun to hear all about their country. I’ve seen pictures of Tana and photographs of her school and the snow in her town which is great. Wish we had snow like that!” – Laura P6
“I liked hearing the Canadian accent reading the poem. It was funny. I enjoy having Kayla as an e-pal and it’s fun hearing about what she gets up to as we have a fair bit in common. It’s cool having veterans (I saw photos of them with the class and Mrs. Kelly) coming into school to talk to pupils. We don’t have that here.” – Katherine P6
“I think it’s really good having this e-pal link. I have a friend from last year too who still writes to me and she even sent me a Christmas present. My new friend, Payton, tells me all about her hobbies, pets and family and we compare how alike we both actually are. She’s a really nice person and this is great fun!” – Charmaine P7
“I think it’s really fun having an e-pal because we get to see how people far away from me really live. My e-pal is Stephanie and we‘re really alike. We write about school things and what is going on at school and her pets. It’s fun having a friend that you can just talk to over the Internet by e mail.” – Florence P7
“Aaron writes to me asking about my school and the castle we have in the village. I don’t think they’ve got castles in Canada. It’s great finding out all about how things are different in Canada to what we have in Scotland. Its fun!” – John P7
“I like finding out all about the Canadian village and county that Kelsey lives in. I really enjoy getting her letters and enjoy writing to her” – Coire P7
“It was wonderful to see the video and SO entertaining. Just listening to the excited voices reading out our news made all the adult involvement worthwhile! Mind you, I think it’s fair to say the adults involved have also struck up a friendship and now enjoy the contact as much as the pupils! Brilliant!” – Mrs. Fotheringham, ICT Teacher
“It was highly entertaining seeing and listening to the video. The young lad who read out my poem did a wonderful job, as believe me some of the words I struggle to pronounce and I’m Scottish! Well done everyone!” – Mrs. Richardson, Head Teacher
