Team wins second round of play downs with 3-2 overtime win on Sunday
The Yarmouth Atom AAA Bee Fisheries Mariners are heading to Sydney, Cape Breton to represent Yarmouth at the 2008 Atom AAA Provincials.

The AAA atom Mariners won Game 3 of their second round of provincial play downs on Sunday with a 3-2 overtime win over South Shore at the Mariners Centre.

The round two win advances the AAA team to provincials, which are taking place in mid-March. The team’s first round win in play downs was over the Western Valley Spartans.

This has been a successful year for the Mariners, who captured the Mainland League regular season crown last month with a record of 19-5-4 atop the eight-team league.

The following are images from Sunday’s Game 3 play down game and results from the best-of-three play down series.
Yarmouth defeated South Shore two games to one in a best-of-three game series.

In the first game played on Feb. 23 at the Mariners Center, South Shore beat Yarmouth 5-2. Scoring for Yarmouth were Matthew Barron and Tristan D'entremont.

Yarmouth came out in full force when they traveled to Lunenburg on Saturday, March 1, defeating South Shore in a must win game 5-3 and forcing a third game in Yarmouth the followind day. Jessy Lennox and Jordan Messenger led the Mariners with two goals apiece, while Tristan D'entremont added the other.

Zander Shaw was in net for the win.



In the third and final game on Sunday March 2 at the Mariners Center, Yarmouth had a 2-1 lead going into the third period when South Shore scored with six minutes left in the period. Neither team was able to score the winner in regulation play, forcing the game into overtime.

Lucas Perry scored 44 seconds into the overtime to give Yarmouth a berth into provincials.

Also scoring for Yarmouth in Game 3 were Jordan Messenger and Jessy Lennox,

Zander Shaw was in net for the win.



Yarmouth will be heading to Sydney on March 12 to face off with the best six atom AAA teams in the province.
