SMBA Stingrays face Guysborough for third place after narrow loss
There will be some familiar faces facing Digby’s senior high school girls in today’s Division 3 basketball championship game in Terre Noire, Cape Breton. The Mariners advanced to the final by edging number one seeded Springhill 56-54.
St. Mary’s Bay Academy Stingrays lost 88-87 in the final seconds to tournament host number one seeded Hants North. Brian Johns of SMBA led all scorers with 27.
The Stingrays play Guysborough today at 1 p.m. in the Kennetcook gym for third place.
Lady Mariners, seeded fifth in the tournament, meet New Germany in a 3 p.m. game for the provincial title.
The two teams have seen each other before. New Germany won the Western Regional playoffs hosted two weeks ago in Digby with a 54-50 win over Bridgewater, the team they played again yesterday and defeated, 54-29.
