Sea ice moving in, may affect seal hunt
Although it hasn’t caused any major problems yet, sea ice has begun to accumulate around Newfoundland.
Last year sea ice greatly impacted those engaged in the seal hunt.
The sea ice is causing some inconvenience for commercial shipping in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Ships are being forced to follow different routes than they normally would between the St. Lawrence River and the eastern seaboard.
Recent persistent winds out of the southwest have pushed the ice onto the northern peninsula, with a heavy concentration around Port au Choix.
The same winds have pushed ice off the island’s northeast coast, although all of this could change as unpredictable weather systems track through the region.
