Yarmouth's weekend sports wrap
LOCAL SKATERS WIN PROVINCIAL MEDALS
Kayla Mooney and Alyse McCarron led the way for the Yarmouth Skating Club at the 2008 StarSkate Provincials in Port Hawkesbury.
Mooney captured gold in the silver triathlon, a
combination of three events. She was first in skating skills, first in interpretive and second in free skate for the overall win. The win qualifies Mooney for the event at the 2008 National StarSkate Championships in Brampton, Ont. in April.
McCarron won her provincial title in the senior bronze free skate. Nicky Woods also reached the podium with a second-place finish in junior bronze free skate.
Sharisse d'Entremont was fourth in the senior bronze short and eight in senior bronze freestyle. Alisha d'Eon was sixth in senior bronze short and ninth in senior bronze freestyle.
Kylie Landry was sixth in peewee and eighth in preliminary short and Celia Muise was 10th in junior bronze freestyle.
AAA MARINERS ADVANCE IN PROVINCIAL PLAY-DOWNS
The Yarmouth AAA atom Bee-fisheries Mariners defeated the Western Valley Spartans 5-1 on Saturday in Kingston.
Jordan Messenger was Yarmouth's leading scorer with two goals. Jaden Pothier, Tristan D'entremont and Lucas Perry each added singles. Zander Shaw picked up the win in net.
The win means Yarmouth wins the best-of-three series two games to none. Next up for Yarmouth is the South Shore Lightning.
ATOM A MARINERS FALL SHORT IN THIRD ROUND OF PLAY DOWNS
The Shelburne Flames edged out the Wedgeport Kwik Mart Atom A Mariners 3-2 in the final minutes of Game 3 of the Atom A provincial play downs on Sunday in Barrington.
Yarmouth was leading the game by one goal heading into the final three-and-a-half minutes but Shelburne came back and scored two quick goals. The Mariners almost tied the game in the final minute but the Flames’ goalie made a key glove save, robbing Yarmouth of the equalizer.
Stephen Shaw had both Mariners goals, assisted by Cole Jacquard and Jean-Guy LeBlanc on one, and Jacob Surette and Maguire Breton on the other.
The Yarmouth squad had pushed the series to a Game 3 after a 3-2 overtime win against Shelburne on Saturday at the Mariners Centre. After being down 2-0, Yarmouth’s first goal came from Shayna Heroux, assisted by Matthew Hines, and Stephen Shaw. The Mariners tied the game in the third with a shorthanded goal by Stephen Shaw, assisted by Cole Jacquard. Shaw scored during a Shelburne 5-on-3 powerplay advantage.
Maguire Breton scored the overtime winner.
Colby Muise was in net for both of the weekend’s play down games.
This had been the third round of play downs for the Atom A Mariners, who had defeated Bridgewater and Chester in earlier rounds.
Shelburne now goes on to play Bedford in the fourth round. The winner of that series advances to provincials.
YCMHS GIRLS BBALL FALLS AT REGIONALS
The Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School girls' basketball team had their season all but ended on the weekend at the hands of Park View.
The Vikings dropped a 65-59 contest to Park View in the opening round of the regional playoffs at Horton. Ariel Smith was the high scorer for Yarmouth with 33 points. The Vikings rebounded for a 54-31 win in the consolation game against Avon View. Kayla Fells scored 11 points and Katy Gray added 10.
Yarmouth, who finished the season with a 22-3 record, now must wait to see if they get an invite to a provincial qualifier.
CLARE LIONS PICK UP PLAYOFF WIN
The Clare Lions picked up a win in their first game of this year's N.S. Jr. C hockey playoffs, a 3-2 win against the Valley Keiths.
Corey Deveau, Ryan Gallant and Marc Lombard provided the offence for Clare and Alain Savoie picked up the win in net, stopping 19 of 21 shots.
Cody White scored twice for Valley and Chris Whitmore took the loss in net, stopping 35 of 38 shots.
MGEC BBALL GIRLS TO HOST DISTRICTS
The Maple Grove girls' basketball team will host the junior girls' district championships tomorrow.
Lockeport plays Shelburne in the first game at 1 p.m. Yarmouth Junior High plays the host squad at 2:30 p.m. The consolation game goes at 4:30 p.m. and the championship is at 6 p.m.
