Loyalist costumes to lend touch of 1780s this summer
Buttons and bows weren’t what you would find in the garb of a Loyalist woman.
What you would find were corset stays and pins, says Jenny Stewart, an expert in historical clothing.
Stewart made a presentation Tuesday to members of local historical societies—and others interested—as part of the ongoing preparations for this summer’s 225th anniversary celebrations of the Loyalists’ landing in Digby.
The celebrations, which run from June to September, include picnics, family history meetings, church services and more, and organizers are hoping to see a number of participants wearing clothing appropriate to the early 1780s.
Angela O’Neil, who heads an ad hoc committee of organizers at the Admiral Digby Museum, said Stewart’s presentation emphasized historical accuracy, including hand stitching, but those who fashion clothes similar to t he period will catch the event’s spirit.
Organizers are hoping men and women will dress in period costume, she said, but expects it will be women who tailor the clothing.
