Fighting, break-ins and snowballs
Yarmouth Town RCMP report
During the timeframe of Jan. 14-27, the Yarmouth Town Detachment of the RCMP received 133 calls for service.

This included nine theft under $5,000, seven 911 hang-ups, 11 mischief/damage to property, five shoplifting, one Mental Health Act investigation, six causing a disturbance, 12 false alarms, one drug investigation, one traffic collision, one business break and enter, five assaults, two residential break and enters, three drunk in a public place and 15 other Criminal Code.

A summary of some of these calls includes:

• Jan. 15, 1:28 p.m., received a call from the Starrs Road Irving of a shoplifter in the convenience store the previous evening.

•Jan. 17, 10 p.m., complaint of a break and enter into a residence in the centre part of town from the previous evening, house had been ransacked, still under investigation.

•Jan. 18, 3:09 p.m., gas and dash at the Irving on Starrs Road.

•Jan. 18, 5:04 p.m., shoplifting complaint at Zellers, two females aged 14 and 15 apprehended.

•Jan. 19, 1:34 a.m., received a call of a disturbance on Main Street near Jenkins Street involving seven or eight subjects fighting.

•Jan. 19, 3:38 p.m., asked to assist Yarmouth Fire Department at the scene of a vehicle leaking gasoline in the Yarmouth Mall parking lot.

•Jan. 19, 8:53 p.m., received a complaint of property damage via a 911 call that four youths were throwing snowballs at the complainant’s home. The RCMP notes that this is not an appropriate use of 911 as it is not an emergency.

•Jan. 21, 1:06 a.m., assisted Emergency Health Services with a medical emergency.

•Jan. 21, 9:06 p.m., received a call of a break and enter to a residence on Tooker Street.

•Jan. 22, 6:20 p.m, received a call from Albert Street of a group of youths throwing snowballs at passing vehicles.

•Jan. 23, 11:04 a.m., motor vehicle collision at Brunswick and Elm streets, two vehicles involved, no injures, both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

•Jan. 25, 6:08 a.m., received a report of a break and enter at the Yarmouth Dental Group offices that had occurred overnight. Matter still under investigation.

•Jan. 25, 5:24 p.m., received a call from the centre part of town to pick up a needle that had been found in the backyard of a residence.

•Jan. 26, 10:49 p.m., received a call via 911 of a disturbance involving four males who were intoxicated and fighting outside Dooley’s, officers attended and dealt with the situation.

•Jan. 27, 4:28 a.m., officers responded to a call of causing a disturbance on Starrs Road in front of Jakes Diner, four female patrons were involved in a fight. Officers arrested and removed individuals, two of which were lodged in cells.





Public Service Announcement:

The RCMP reminds the public of things to keep in mind involving the Off-Highway Vehicle Act. An off-highway vehicle refers to an all terrain vehicle (ATV), snowmobile, motorbike or mini bike.

No person shall operate or be a passenger on an off-highway vehicle unless that person is wearing a helmet that complies with the regulations.

No person shall operate an off-highway vehicle on private land, a golf course, playground or any private property without the written permission of the owner of that property.

No person shall operate an off-highway vehicle on a beach, in a wilderness area, in a provincial park or a park reserve.

No person shall operate an off-highway vehicle on a highway/street/roadway, upon a shoulder or the median of a highway.

A police officer may seize an off-highway vehicle when they believe an offence has been committed under this act.
