The Gates Computer Lab at the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Library in Yarmouth is offering a full slate of courses in February including dealing with viruses and spyware and an introduction to Microsoft Excel. Listed below are the courses being offered beginning Thursday, Feb.7:
Purchasing a Computer
Thursday, Feb. 7, 2 to 4 p.m.
Are you looking to buy a computer and want some key advice? This two-hour session will introduce you to the components of a computer and will provide you with advice to help you find the system that suits your needs.
Computer Basics
Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2 to 4 p.m.
This two-hour course is about the basics of computers such as using the mouse and keyboard, opening and closing programs and multi-tasking.
Internet Basics
Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2-4 p.m.
An introductory course to the Internet (World Wide Web): come in and learn how to “surf the Net.” Topics include navigating the Internet, an introduction to the Western Counties Regional Library Web site, and performing basic searches.
File Management Basics
Thursday, Feb. 14, 2 to 4 p.m.
This is a two-hour session about the basics of file management. Topics covered will include how to create and save files, how to locate lost files, creating folders, moving files and folders and deleting files.
Introduction to Microsoft Excel
Tuesday, Feb. 19 and 26, 2 to 4 p.m.
This is a two-part introductory course in Microsoft Excel. Come and learn the basics of spreadsheets. Topics will include navigation, formatting, basic formulas and more.
Introduction to Facebook
Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2 to 4 p.m.
This two-hour session will introduce people to the Internet Web site Facebook. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos and learn more about the people they meet. Come and learn how to access and use this new site. Dealing with Viruses and Spyware
Wednesday, Feb. 27, 6 to 8 p.m.
This two-hour session will deal with viruses and spyware. Learn about where they come from, the problems they cause and how to protect yourself. This course will include demonstrations on some of the more common infections that can occur and provide information on where you can get tools to deal with these “pests.”
