Mariners Edge Crushers In Shootout

The Yarmouth Mariners (32-7-2-1) edged the Pictou County Weeks Crushers (23-17-1-1) 5-4 in a shootout Thursday night in New Glasgow.

Ryan Penney opened the scoring at 2:03 to give the Mariners an early 1-0 lead. Alexandre Soucy scored at 13:51 to extend the lead to 2-0. Justin Saulnier (powerplay) scored at 17:01 to increase the lead to 3-0 after the first period. Tyson Cameron (powerplay) scored at 4:07 to cut the lead to 3-1. Dakota Johnson scored at 11:04 to regain the 3 goal lead at 4-1. Kevin MacLean scored at 12:50 to cut the lead in half at 4-2 after the second period. Jason Rinzler (unassisted) scored at 1:30 to move the Crushers to within 1 goal at 4-3. Andrew Paquet (shorthanded) scored at 6:36 to tie the game 4-4 and force overtime. In the extra period, nothing was settled. In the shootout, Steve Pearson (game winner) and Ryan Penney scored for Yarmouth. Morrissette stopped Paquet and Jordan Knox.

Yarmouth went 1 for 6 on the powerplay while Pictou County went 1 for 4.

Jocelyn Morrissette stopped 31 of 35 shots while Alexandre Quessy stopped 36 of 40 shots. Both goaltenders earned a tie.
