Amero rink rolling to junior nationals
Digby native Kelsey Amero knows how to rock the province.
The 19-year-old Saint Mary’s University student put together a curling team this winter and won the Nova Scotia junior men’s championship Jan. 7 in Halifax.
To get to the nationals, the Amero rink had to get past two-time junior champion Dominic Daemen and his rink. They won 7-6 in the 10th end, curling at the Lakeshore Curling Club in Dartmouth.
Amero and the metro team, which curls out of the Mayflower club, now head to the national championship Feb. 3-10 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
The Amero rink’s success fulfills an ambition Kelsey has had for some time to curl on the national scene, said his mother Anne. “He’s tried to get out of here before.”
On the team with Amero are Adrian Anctil, Cameron MacKenzie, Justin Burns and alternate Chris Baltzer. Anctil skippered the team through a qualifying event in December when Amero was absent due to a family obligation.
