Currently in the Ross Creek Gallery: Winnipeg’s Les Newman’s ‘Death of the Party’ opening reception will be held Sun., Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. His whimsical art was inspired by a recent trip to Japan with a great exploration of colour. This is a wonderful exhibit to see.

RCCA is also calling for visual art, new media and craft artist submissions for their April Gallery Spring Group Show for the 2008-2009 season. Proposals, digital format on CD or DVD with 10-20 images, CV, artist statement, and proposal for the exhibit should be postmarked by Thurs., Jan. 31, 2008 and must reflect the theme “Journeys” and can be taken literally or figuratively.

Juried selection notification in early March. Exhibit dates of April 6 to June 23.

RCCA Residency: one-month artist residency package available. Two Planks and a Passion Theatre Company, Ross Creek’s resident theatre, will be in rehearsals for Our Town during June, and the residency proposal must link the theme of ‘Traditions’ and the performance company.

The resident artist will have access to rehearsals and will be paid a stipend, with accommodation and meals provided as well as an exhibition fee. The resident artist’s work will open July 1 in the professional gallery (unless the proposal is for outdoor exhibit). Submissions by Thurs., Jan. 31, juried in February and contacted by Sat., Mar. 15.

Glooscap School Message: A large thank-you to all for their support in December. Concert presentation of “December in our Town” was extremely well attended (and enjoyed!) and the gifts of funds from the freewill offering are being directed to the purchase of choir mics to support future musical presentations.

Profits of approximately $600 were allocated for the purchase of a specialized table and chair. The skating party with a treat of hot chocolate continued to be a hit.

Thanks to the Home and School for providing this and to Joe Keddy from the Glooscap Arena.

- Corena Burbidge, Principal

The Home and School winners of the Basket Raffle that raised $965 to support the school skating program included: Tanisha Kalkman - Pamper yourself; Ellen Parsons - Turkey dinner; and Howard Rogers - Literacy.

Library fundraiser: students are asked to keep saving grocery receipts from Sobey’s and Canning Valu-Foods with a special thanks to all who have.

The “Adopt-A-Library” program continues with a goal of 10,000 books before June 1. Record the number of books a child reads at home and send the total to the child’s teacher. School total will be tallied and posted on the RCMP’s “fighting crime” website. “Over the previous few months, our students have read almost 3,000 books! We’re getting closer to the total of 10,000 books we need to read by March, but we still have much work to do. So keep reading away and more prizes will be awarded to dedicated students at the end of the month,” says Shawn Gregory.

The Library is also participating in the Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book Awards for Grades 4 and 5. Students must read five specified books and vote on their favourite. Prizes for participants will be provided in the spring.

Mini Indoor Soccer: The Valley District Soccer Association is now accepting registrations for its indoor mini-program beginning Sat., Jan. 12. Contact Dwight Macleod 678-2426 or at www.valleysoccer.org for further information.
