Vehicle arson, shoplifters and false alarms
Yarmouth Town RCMP report
During the timeframe of Dec. 17 to Jan. 1, the Yarmouth Town Detachment of the RCMP responded to 165 calls for service.

This included: 26 false alarms, 12 mischief complaints, 10 causing a disturbance, seven traffic collisions, one vehicle arson, three theft under $5,000, 15 hang-ups of 911 calls, five assaults, three impaired drivers, six shoplifters, five Mental Health Act investigations, three drunk in a public place and six other Criminal Code matters.

Of note, the detachment started off the New Year with 16 calls for service on Jan. 1. The following is a summary of other calls made during the two-week period noted above.

– Dec. 17, 2:09 p.m., mischief call via 911 of a group of youths trying to pick a fight with subjects entering Wal-Mart.

– Dec 17, 6:55 p.m., Willow Street, complaint of mischief, two youths throwing snowballs at passing cars.

– Dec. 18, 4:58 p.m., report of shoplifting at Wal-Mart, two youths arrested.

– Dec. 19, 5:27 a.m., assistance requested by the Yarmouth Fire Department at a suspicious vehicle fire on Argyle Street, still under investigation.

– Dec. 19, 2:25 p.m., shoplifting complaint at Superstore.

– Dec. 22, 4 a.m., report of suspicious activity on Havelock Drive between Belmont and Sawdust Trail, complainant had heard a ‘gunshot’ in front of the residence. Patrol made, nothing suspicious discovered.

– Dec. 21, 11 p.m., while on patrol officers observed an intoxicated person on Willow Street. Subject arrested and lodged overnight.

– Dec. 22, 6:38 p.m., call from Shoppers Drug Mart of three youths caught shoplifting.

– Dec. 25, 2:10 p.m., property damage complaint from the Yarmouth branch of the Nova Scotia Art Gallery. A window facing Main Street had been damaged overnight.

– Dec. 26, 11:51 a.m., property damage complaint from James Street. Someone had driven over complainant’s lawn overnight causing damage.

– Dec. 27, 1:37 p.m., residence broken into on East Street.

– Jan. 1, 3 a.m., responded to a call of causing a disturbance involving a fight outside Jake’s. Fight was over when officers arrived.

– Jan. 1, 1:31 a.m., property damage report from Cliff Street. Someone had smashed the front window to a residence.
