The Middleton girls senior high basketball team beat Digby 63-52 in the Digby Regional gym Tuesday night, Dec. 18.
Digby Mariners’ coach Tyler Colwell says they have 10 new players and they are all learning as they go.
“We’re very young but I see improvements. Lots of little things: we’re learning to get teammates open and working together as a team. We’ll be competing for it at the end of the year.”
The Mariners came out strong, running up eight points in a row to start the game. They finished the first quarter up 18-11.
But Middleton settled into their zone defence in the second quarter and put up 23 points to Digby’s 7. Score at the half: 34-21 Middleton.
“With a zone, normally our low post cuts out to the foul line,” said Colwell. “And they have to choose who to defend, but we haven’t had everyone out to practice lately and we’re still working on a few things.”
Digby fought back to within six points in the third and in the fourth they were only a field goal away from tieing it up.
Colwell says the Mariner’s record is about even but they have been playing a lot of teams from higher divisions. Digby is a division three team but Middleton for example is division two.
