Two friends from Port Wade shared the biggest legal bingo prize in Nova Scotia history last week.

Gloria Apt and Lucille McDow won $23,291.95 playing Atlantic Lotto’s Superstar bingo at the Digby Fire Hall on Saturday, Nov. 24.

The pair have played together for years and always share their winnings.

“That way if one person wins and the other doesn’t, you both go home happy,” explains Gloria Apt. “We share so no one goes home feeling sad.”

The win was actually on Apt’s card. She remembers needing just three numbers: B1, I25 and O68.

“O68 was the last one and I remember seeing it coming on the screen. I can tell you I was never so excited in my life.”

At the time the women didn’t know just how much money they had won. Another bingo player told them about a “bonus top-up” but they didn’t know for sure until they picked up their money in Moncton on Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Superstar bingo is played province wide every night at 8:15 p.m. – the Digby Fire Dept. bingo runs Saturdays at 7 p.m.

On Nov. 24 the jackpot was up to $13, 291.95 but Atlantic Lotto had also added a “Top-it-up” jackpot bonus of $10,000.

Atlantic Lotto held a “winner celebration” party at the Digby Fire Hall bingo on Saturday, Dec. 8.

They brought balloons, refreshments, and loads of draw prizes, not to mention a couple of big cheques.

The women were also presented with leather Superstar bingo jackets.

Apt says she and McDow play bingo from Windsor to Weymouth, usually three to four nights a week.

Apt has three grown children and three grandchildren.

“It feels great to win this now. I’ll have a little extra money for them at Christmas.”

The Digby Fire Dept. received $500 for hosting the jackpot winner.
