November 25, 2007 to December 1, 2007 LOHNES (Mason), Ruby L., Caledonia. It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Ruby L. (Mason) Lohnes surrounded by her devoted husband and family on Nov. 25 2007. Ruby was born at home on December 13, 1925 at Head of St. Margaret’s Bay NS. She was the eleventh of twelve children of Loftus and Emma (Pegg) Mason. As a young woman she attended St. Margaret’s Bay School to grade eleven. During this same period she worked as a phone operator in her home where her mother managed the office of Maritime Tel and Tel. She also worked as a clerk in the local general store, owned and operated by her brother Fred, until her marriage. Ruby was married at St. George's Anglican Church on November 22, 1952, to Gerald Lohnes who worked as a Station Agent for CNR for a period in 1951 and 1952 at French Village Station in Tantallon, NS. They moved to Yarmouth NS and finally to Caledonia, Queens County, where her husband was the Station Agent for many years. During her time as a most wonderful wife, mother and grandmother she was very active in the community of Caledonia especially the Red Cross, North Queens Nursing Home, school committees and Meals on Wheels and was an active member of the Anglican Church. Ruby enjoyed cooking and baking for all the local events and many of the people in the community remarked on the fact that you never left Ruby's home without partaking in many of her goodies. She mothered many and opened her heart and her home to all who knew her. Ruby will be greatly missed by her loving husband of 55 years, Gerald, Caledonia; her dedicated and loving children; daughter Barbara (Ronald) Dowding, Hubley; sons Robert (Marie), Upper Tantallon, Peter (Nathalie) Halifax, Ralph (Karen) Caledonia, Gregory (Carolyn) Hd. of St. Margaret’s Bay. Also her beloved grandchildren; Kristopher (Elaine Montebello), Tantallon, Kevin (Sarah Crown), Toronto, Natasha Dowding (Gavin Mills), Hillsburgh, ON, Jessica and Isaac Lohnes, Caledonia, NS, Zachary and Thom Lohnes, Hd. of St. Margaret’s Bay, NS, Zara Lohnes, Halifax. She is also survived by sisters Lillian Weldon, Hd. of St. Margaret’s Bay and Eileen Ecker, Digby, NS; sisters-in-law, Muriel Mason of Hd. of St. Margaret’s Bay, Wendy Lohnes, Hemford, NS and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Richard and Doreen Lohnes, California, U.S.A. and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers: Granville, Arthur, Fred, James, Charles, Clarence, George, and sisters Mary and Eleanor. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ruby's life was held at Christ Anglican Church, Caledonia on Thursday November 29, 2007. Rev. Anna Hoeg officiated, with internment at Highland Cemetery, Hibernia Rd. Following the interment there was a reception at the Legion Hall in Caledonia. November 25, 2007 to December 1, 2007 Wayne Gardner Grant – 61, of Spryfield, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2007 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Windsor, Hants County, he was the son of James Arnold Grant, Cambridge and the late Ada Amelia (Keddy) Grant. He had been employed for 34 years with the former Standard Paving and LaFarge Canada as a heavy equipment operator, fuel truck driver and an asphalt plant operator. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time with friends at the Spryfield Tim Horton’s. He also enjoyed spending summer vacations at his property in Hortonville, Kings County. He was a loving husband, son, father, brother, grandson, grandfather and friend. In addition to his father, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife, the former Judy Ann Keddy; two daughters, Sheena Grant (Bill Gourley) and Dawn (Jason) Dilworth; two grandchildren, Mackenzie and Ethan, all of Halifax; his grandmother, Evelyn Keddy, Aaldersville, Lunenburg County; two sisters, Judy R. Grant, Halifax; Darlene (Matthew) Croft, Gaspereau Mountain; a brother-in-law, Norwood Whynot, Brookside; nieces and nephews, Brad and Kimberlea Whynot, Nicholas and Samantha Croft; a great nephew, Khoal Whynot. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his sister, Debbie Whynot. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Leonard Bednar officiated. A private family interment took place in the family plot in the Anglican Cemetery, Aaldersville. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of your choice. November 25, 2007 to December 1, 2007 Margaret Anne Lewis – 66, of Kentville passed away Monday, November 26, 2007 at home. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of Mildred Pearl (Smith) Nauss, Grand View Manor, Berwick and the late Charles Clifford Nauss. She had been employed with the federal government for over three decades, much of which was served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, New Minas Detachment. She was a member of the Centreville Baptist Church, where she held various positions within the church and had been active with the choir. She enjoyed cross-stitching, stamping, knitting, crocheting, cooking, traveling and was a chocoholic. She had been active with Fidelis House, the Red Hatters and was a founding member of the Carmen Club. She also enjoyed nature and being outdoors. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Andrew (Cathy) Lewis, Kentville; Steven, California; two brothers, David (Joyce), Halifax; Donald, New Minas; one aunt, one uncle, several nieces and nephews. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Marc Potvin officiated. November 25, 2007 to December 1, 2007 TREFRY, Phyllis H. - Melbourne, passed away at the age of 79 on November 27, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital with family by her side. Born in Melbourne, she was a daughter of the later Earl and Ethel Allen. Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother on Snuggledown Farm where she and her husband, Ross, farmed and raised their family. She was a loyal organist and choir member of the Arcadia and Chebogue Baptist Churches, a member of the local Rebekah organizations and the Yarmouth Garden Club. When her children were mostly raised, Phyllis worked at Tidal View Manor and then in the CSR Department at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. She also volunteered at the Yarmouth Red Cross, the reading program at Arcadia School, and was a member of the Arcadia Silver Seniors. She loved being a grandmother and enjoyed knitting, doing puzzles and playing golf. Phyllis is survived by children, Allister Trefry, Bradner, B.C.; Diane Trefry, Warwick, Md.; Murray Trefry, Egmont, B.C.; Hugh (Tammy) Trefry, Sechelt, B.C.; Faye Lease, Pecos, Tex.; Tari (Richard) Robicheau, Lake George; Harry (Kelly) Trefry, Ottawa, Ont.; and Judi (Marty) Mallinson, Tusket; sisters, Doris Sharp, Halifax; Ruth Swim, Overton; Marian (Albert) King, Brooklyn; brothers, Arthur (Shirley) Allen, Kingston, Ont.; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Stacey Trefry, Adam Clevenger and Heather Nowell, Chad and Brett Trefry, Shawneen and Lewis Trefry, Kelly and Christopher Lease, Danielle and Lynn Robicheau, Jeremy, Adam and Ryan Trefry, Michael, Justine and Jade Mallinson; great-grandchildren, Brianna Trefry, Ian Keeler, Riley and Taylor Noyes, Mason Nowell, Carmen Trefry, Tori-Lynn Trefry. November 25, 2007 to December 1, 2007 drew (maughan), Gertrude Rebecca – 80, of Yarmouth, and formally of Sandford, passed away November 27, 2007, at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth on July 4, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Florence Thurston. Gertrude was a member of Sandford United Baptist Church, and a former member of TOPS. In earlier years she was a waitress at the Bright Spot Restaurant. She enjoyed going to flea markets and yard sales. Gertrude is survived by sons John Maughan, Yarmouth; Jim (Heather) Maughan, Rothesay, N.B.; sisters Marjorie (Edgar) Landers, Sandford, N.S.; Helene (Gordon) Young, Rothesay, N.B.; grandchildren Melissa and Carter Maughan; and great-grandchild Madison. She was predeceased by brothers Donald and Earlston; first husband John Maughan; and second husband Thomas Drew. There was a private family funeral held with no visitation by request. November 25, 2007 to December 1, 2007 Constance Barbara Louise (Connie) Steene - 75, Wolfville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Murray and Martha (Coldwell) Vallis. Connie was a hairdresser for a number of years before she became a Real Estate Agent for 23 years in the Valley. She was a member of the Gaspereau Baptist Church and a member of the Gaspereau Ladies Auxiliary. Connie was also a past member of the #68 Blomidon Chapter of the Eastern Star. Connie is survived by her daughter, Patricia L. Steene, Victoria, BC; and her sister Betty A. (Cecil) Pulsifer, Wolfville. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Ross M. Steene, son, James M. Steene, brother, Bernard Vallis, and sister, Sandra Plewes. Cremation has taken place, and there was no visitation as per Connie’s wishes. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, November 30 at 2:00pm from the Gaspereau Baptist Church, Rev. Mark Shaw and Rev. Gary Manthorne officiated. All were welcome to join family and friends at a reception following the Service in the Gaspereau Community Centre. No flowers by request. November 25, 2007 to December 1, 2007 DURLING, Franklin Warren”Frank” - 71, Victoria Road, Wilmot, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2007 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Bridgetown, he was a son of the late Truman and Lola (Schaffner) Durling. He was in the Canadian Army with the R.C.H.A. Station at Shilo, Man. He worked for Irving Oil for 38 years, 28 years of it were as branch manager at the Irving Steamer Storage in Margaretville and the next 10 years were as branch manager in Middleton, retiring in 1993. On the side, he also held a contract with Canada Post, operating the Highway Service from Middleton to Digby for 16 years with his son Paul. He also operated a window and door business for 20 years and a fish and lobster business at the Margaretville Wharf. He was a member of the Middleton Lions Club for the last 5 years as vice President Director and also belonged to the Irving Alumni Association in Saint John. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Isabell; sons, Allan (Pam) and Greg (Shelley), both of Margaretville; daughter, Donna (Frank) Nowe, Meadowvale; grandchildren, Darren, Melanie, Randy, Justine, Mitchell, Ryan, Perry, Jamie and Kristin; great grandchildren, Jason, Keisha, Gabriel, Kayla; sister, Margaret (Eddie) Taylor, Granville Ferry and brother, Ernest (Elizabeth) Durling, Bridgetown. He was predeceased by his son, Paul and great granddaughter, Charlotte. Cremation has taken place. November 25, 2007 to December 1, 2007 ROSE, Gertrude Myda - 87, Port Maitland, Yarmouth Co., went home to be with her Lord on November 28, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born July 26, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Hazel (Newell) Pitman (Brooklyn). She was a member of Bay View Baptist Church, Port Maitland, a past president of the Women's Missionary Society, past president of the Yarmouth County Association of WMS, member of the Gideons, and member of the Canadian Red Cross. She taught Sunday school for many years. She operated Rose's Lakeview Farm Bed & Breakfast for 13 years. She is survived by daughters, Marilyn (Robert) Ellis, Cedar Lake; Heather (Scott) MacDonald, Sandford; sons, James (Peggy), Port Maitland; William (Linda), Short Beach; Arthur (Diane), Port Maitland; sister, Helen (Arthur) Woodcock, Toronto; special cousin, Gladys Turnbull, Dartmouth; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Clarence; infant grandson, Scott Paul Ellis; grandson, Benjamin Franklin Rose; brother, William Pitman. Visitation was held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 with funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 1, both in Bayview Baptist Church, Rev. Steve Hopper officiated, assisted by Rev. Scott MacDonald and Pastor Larry Pennell. Internment in Port Maitland Cemetery.
