The Windsor Curling Club may not have a building anymore, but it does have a spirited group of dedicated volunteers.

Less than two months after the fire that destroyed the Windsor rink, the rubble has been cleared from the site and planning for a replacement rink is underway. Fundraising efforts will be boosted by a major benefit concert this week in Windsor.

Gaspereau Valley Bluegrass greats the Spinney Brothers will highlight the concert, “Raising the House” at the Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre Thursday, Nov. 22. The 16-time Eastern Canadian Bluegrass Award winners will be accompanied by local country and classic rock musicians Soldier’s Creek and opening act bluegrass, folk, gospel and country musician Sharon Ogilvie.

One of the event’s organizers, Brian Johnston, is pleased that talented musicians and technicians are donating their time to help the local curling community rebuild. “We’re beginning to bring the club back to life and the concert is one of the first events to kick off major fundraising,” he said.

Overwhelming community support for the club’s rebuilding campaign is evident in the list of sponsors. Not only has Mermaid Theatre donated its venue for the event, sponsors include Pothier Motors, Sepracorp Canada, NuAir Ventilation, Lohnes Funeral Services, Pepsi (Allen Beverages), the Spitfire Arms, Tim Hortons and local MLA Chuck Porter.

Other recent fundraising events have included the club’s annual Halloween dance and sales of T-shirts celebrating the club’s centennial year.

Tickets for the show are $20 and available at Moe’s Place Music Sales in Windsor.
