There are better ways of reducing the tax burden on Canadians.
Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced a number of tax cuts October 30, including corporate and personal income tax reductions and a further one-per–cent reduction of the GST.
Kings-Hants Liberal MP Scott Brison says it’s not good enough.
“I don’t agree with the GST cut,” Brison says. There should be more personal income tax reductions.
“Cuts to the GST are not good economic policy, not good social policy.”
As for the tax cuts, in general, he says the money is needed more for the nation’s infrastructure, support for agriculture and transportation infrastructure, important for economic growth.
At the same time, he notes, he would like to see health and wellness promotion play a bigger part.
“Part of that is recreation infrastructure.”
As well, the minister’s announcement did nothing to solidify the latest agreement made with the Nova Scotia government, giving it more benefits from offshore resource royalties, Brison says.
He notes the Liberals are currently working on their platform, which he is confident will receive favorable response from Canadians.
