“People need to think about their heritage and come forward and help us, otherwise the legion will fold,” warns David Cleaver, president of the Clark’s Harbour Royal Canadian Legion #148.
Cleaver says that during the last war, Cape Sable Island had the largest number of volunteers per capita anywhere in Canada.

The legion services from Woods Harbour to parts of Clyde River. From the combined membership (50 ordinary, 11 life, and 45 associate) there are “quite a few” that have said they will not be renewing their membership says Cleaver.

The combination of volunteer burnout and necessity for active fundraising is taking its toll. The organization has been running a greater deficit than revenue.

“It’s increasing difficult to keep the legion running,” said Cleaver.

“We do help support the community and we need volunteers. We hold bingo every Wednesday and it’s the same three, four or five of us every week.”

The legion building belongs to the Town of Clark’s Harbour, which does not charge the organization rent. It is a designated Emergency Measures Organization evacuation site.

Heating, security for functions, telephone, building repairs, and other utility costs are taking its toll on the organization. Cleaver says the bathroom facilities in the building need to be updated and estimates the cost for this to be $25,000 to $30,000.

He concedes that volunteering issues and fundraising necessities are not peculiar to this legion but problems that are affecting legions across Canada.

The next event at the legion will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. The annual Remembrance Day banquet has been free for all in the past, but because of financial concerns, the cost for guests is now $8. For veterans, members and their wives there will be no charge. The Martinelli’s will provide the entertainment. Reservations are required by Nov. 5 at 902-745-0703.
