Habitat for Humanity plans Liverpool project
Organization needs county volunteers
Requiring $45,000, a piece of land, volunteers, and donated supplies, the Habitat for Humanity South Shore Chapter has “targeted” Liverpool as its next build site.
Based out of Halifax, Habitat for Humanity has been on the South Shore for the past four to five years.

They began excavation on their first house Oct. 16 in Bridgewater.

Habitat for Humanity public relations officer and board member, Hank Middleton says with the funding arrangements complete for the Bridgewater house, they had to start looking for the next site.

The process leading up to building a house is a “complicated scenario,” he explains.

They are required to have $45,000 before they can move forward.

Middleton says they also need a donation of land in the Liverpool area for the next build.

Habitat for Humanity then looks at fundraising and choosing a family to live in the home.

The family also has to put in at least 500 hours of volunteer time and mortgage payments, although low, are used to help build future homes.

Middleton would also like Queens County residents to come forward and serve on the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors.

“You have to have a wide spectrum of people with a variety of skills,” he says.

Most of the materials, such as bathroom fixtures, lumber and siding, for the first building project in Bridgewater were donated.

If people donate those items, it just becomes a matter of finding someone to assemble the house, Middleton says.

They are also looking for volunteers.

“It’s a community project really,” he adds.

In summation, Middleton says they need to get some strong people in Queens County to get the second house project going on the South Shore.
