Our Volunteer Fire Department wrapped up Fire Prevention Week with an Open House Oct. 14. Many kids and their parents came to get a close-up look at the firefighters, their equipment and their trucks.

Kids had the opportunity to talk to the firefighters, climb in the truck cab and see how things worked. Sparky the fire dog was on hand to give them fire prevention treat bags and red plastic helmets.

Framed photos of the history of the department and the latest equipment also caught the eye of many visitors. Acadia’s Hockey Axemen manned the barbecue and served hot dogs to all.

Members of the Port Williams and District Lions Club will conduct a door-to-door canvass for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind's Annual Campaign from Oct. 4-27. Used eyeglasses will also be collected for the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program, which provides eyeglasses for those in need in developing countries.

During the canvass, orders will also be taken for 911 signs for those residences in our area that do not have the reflective blue signs with white numbers. Providers of emergency service such as our fire department and emergency medical care are able to save valuable minutes in reaching your residence if a 911 sign is visible on your property. The costs of the signs are as follows: 5”x8”: 1 or 2 numbers single sided - $7 or double sided - $8.75; 5”x12”: 3 numbers single sided - $10.50 or double sided - $12.25; 5”x14”: 4 numbers single sided - $12 or double sided - $14.25; 5”x16”: 5 numbers single sided - $13.75 or double sided - $16.25. HST included. Tickets will soon be available for the Christmas Raffle draw which will take place in mid-December.

There will be a Variety Show at the Community Centre Sun., Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. featuring Hillbilly Magic, Caroll Edwards, High Country and Jim Brown and Friends, with sound by Dave Arenburg. Admission is $5.

There will be a canteen and 50/50 draw. Come and enjoy an afternoon of good music! Proceeds for the Lions Club's community service projects.

Come to lunch at the Baptist Church Wed., Oct. 31 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu consists of soup and chowder, rolls, dessert, tea, coffee and juice. Takeouts are available by calling 542-3012. Sponsored by the Loyal Workers, the proceeds will be used for church purposes.

The Port Williams Health Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, Nov.13 at 9:30 a.m., downstairs in the PW Baptist Church. The guest speaker will be Robin Whidden, Nurse at the Mud Creek Medical Co-op. A general meeting will follow and everyone is invited to attend.
