Cool weather, hunting season, leaves to rake and fall clean-up. Yes, October is half over and Christmas is fast approaching.

Halloween ghosts and goblins will be on the streets in two weeks – are you ready? What kind of treats do you hand out? I know my kids usually get a vast array. We usually stick to the houses that we know and the kids are always pleased about the night. Pencils, notepads, chips and chocolate are the usual items. Make sure you get your stash ready.

Happy birthday to Larry Pick, who celebrated Oct. 14. Debbie Levy is celebrating her birthday Oct. 19 and Conrad Levy celebrates on the 21st.

Hockey has started. The Quickstart program began Oct. 15. Depending on where you live, there are practices in Kentville, Canning and Wolfville. Support the new recruits and go cheer for a family member or friend.

Some of the older divisions have started already and good luck to them all. Dylan is in Quickstart and Branden will be in the Novice house league. It’ll be busy, but I hope the schedules will work and not conflict too much.

Hockey is a popular sport for the young children. I know there was over 40 children in the hockey camp that took place from Oct. 2-13. It’s a lot of hard work and I applaud the children. Maybe they should have a school for adults to learn to skate; I know I could use it.

Remember, card parties start tonight. Everyone is welcome. White Rock Community hall at 7:30 p.m. Lunch is provided at the end of the evening. Have fun.

Darts will be starting soon. For the players of past years, you will probably get a call. For anyone else wanting to start a new pastime, you can contact Karl Pick at 542-5478. Everyone is welcome to join.

The auction is going to be held Saturday, Nov. 10 at the White Rock Hall. This annual event brings people together for a night to socialize and purchase some wants or needs at the same time.

There will be new and used items for auction. There will also be a bake table, mini ticket auction, 50/50 tickets and a canteen.

If anyone is interested in donating an item or helping out with the organization, you can contact Karl Pick, Garf Langille or any one of the community association members. They will point you in the right direction.

Don’t forget about the New Year’s Dance. Tickets are now available from Diane Ells (542-5173) and Sandra Cudmore (542-5518).

There’ll be a roast beef dinner catered by Hilltop Catering and music by DJ Darlene Jamieson. Dinner and dance tickets are $50 per couple. Single tickets are also available or you can purchase tickets for the dinner only or dance only.

Please note on your calendars that the next community meeting will be held Oct. 24 rather than the regular last Wednesday of the month

I think that’s all for now. If you get a chance, take a drive around the community. There are lots of things to view: Jack’s new home is in place; the Black River community hall is receiving renovations both to the building and its surrounding area; houses are for sale and you never know; you might see a deer.

Remember, if you’re walking – wear orange! Have a nice week.
