Quebec family finds man’s note-in-a-bottle, can’t find the author

Kings County Register

A Quebec family is looking for Valley answers to a mystery dating back to June 2, 2005.

It appears a Frank Moriarty of Randy Lane, here in Kings County, was on board the Ferry Camille-Marcoux off Sept-isles when he tucked a note inside a bottle and dropped it overboard.

Michelle Chabot called The Kings County Register two weeks ago looking for help.

“On September 1, 2007, my husband, Jacques, was walking on the beach with my father and they found a bottle. There was a message inside. What a funny discovery!”

Chabot says the family wrote to Moriarty on the address on his note, but the letter came back undelivered. When they called Moriarty’s telephone number, a new person answered and had had the number for a year-and-a-half.

“Jacques and I were disappointed,” Chabot says.

They searched the internet and found an F.Moriarty in Ontario - a woman named Frances.

“We want to find him - he was probably thinking the bottle would be found in France or Ireland. The bottle did a so short journey, but it took more than two years to find it.”

The Bergerons have a few guesses about Moriarty: they figure he’s over 40 years old, as his note was stamped with his name and address. They hope he’s moved, or maybe won millions in the lottery and is harder to find.

“Maybe someone will tell you that M.Moriarty is his uncle and now he lives in Vancouver - anything is possible,” Chabot says.

“It’s been a month, and everyone is asking us, ‘Did you find the man?’ We have no answers - we are so disappointed.”

Chabot is hoping a Register reader may know Frank Moriarty and contact the paper to pass on details or contact information. If you can help, call 681-2121, ext. 309, or email editor@berwickregister.ca.
