Terry Fox Run on Digby Neck
Fifty-one participants, both young and old ran, walked or cycled 10 kilometres from Digby Neck Consolidated School to Little River and back on Sept. 16 and in doing so raised $1,547 for cancer research.
Two intrepid souls, Cindy Graham and Anna-Marie MacKenzie Kelly, even used the event to do a triathlon as part of their fitness regime. They ran 10 kilometres, then cycled 30 km more before finishing their day by swimming the length of Lake Midway.
This was the 27th year nationally of the run, and the 18th for Digby Neck. The event was started after 22-year-old Terry Fox ran over halfway across Canada on one leg to raise cancer awareness.
There were a number of participants from all walks of life in the local run. This included at least four senior citizens – Roy Thurber, 71, Harold Rowe, 69, Dorothy Tidd, 67, and Rae Tidd, 65.
One young grandmother walked the distance with her granddaughter, carrying her on her shoulders for part of the way. Other participants included families from Digby Neck who participate year after year in this event, which was organized by Elfreda Thibault and her volunteers.
