Aquaculture to be celebrated in Shelburne
Nova Scotia's aquaculture industry will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 15, during the Aquaculture Harvest Festival in Shelburne.

"We host an annual festival in one of our coastal regions where aquaculture operations are located or if they have the potential to be developed," said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Ron Chisholm. "This year, we have chosen Shelburne because aquaculture sites have done well in the area, but there are also new opportunities for more aquaculture activity in Shelburne County."

There are 23 aquaculture sites in the county. Nova Scotia's aquaculture industry is valued at about $42 million.

To recognize the aquaculture industry, festival organizers have arranged for free seafood samples, a touch tank and face painting for children, and entertainment by local musicians.

Chisholm will present a $1,000 bursary for a graduating student from the Shelburne area who is pursuing post-secondary studies in aquaculture or in an aquaculture-related field.

The festival takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Guild Hall. Admission is free.
