A drive for an effective grey seal harvest is receiving support from municipalities in South West Nova.
At their last council meeting, the Municipality of Barrington voted unanimously to send a letter to provincial and federal Ministers of Fisheries in support of a harvest because “the number of grey seals in the area is now becoming detrimental to the local fishery and to the economy of the area”.
The Municipality of Yarmouth is also sending letters of support for a grey seal harvest.
The grey seal herd is estimated at being at least 300,000 in the Gulf region and Scotia Fundy.
Grey seals can be harvested in the Scotia Fundy region year-round for meat by licensed sealers. Juvenile pelts are usually taken during the month of February. High-powered rifles are used for harvesting, with the majority of mammals from islands and coastal beaches off of Cape Breton and the Nova Scotia Eastern Shore region.
