THE ADVANCE

The annual readers festival in Port Medway has been “revamped” with multiple authors in what is now a day-long event.
The Port Medway Parents and Tots Association has partnered with the South Shore Regional Library.

This partnership created the Port Medway Children’s Readers Festival 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Old Meeting House.

Heather Stevens, a member of the Port Medway Parents and Tots Association who also works at the South Shore Regional Library, is hosting the festival.

Stevens will provide musical entertainment during breaks as well.

“I’m just so proud of the event,” she says. “This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to come and meet real authors.”

The event begins at 10 a.m. with Marjorie Speed Powell reading from her book, “Alexander’s Sky Blue Eggs.”

Children will have a 15-minute break between each author.

After a short break, Michelle Mulder, originally from the Annapolis Valley, will read “Theadore Too and the Shipwreck School.”

Lunch will be provided around noon at the Port Medway Fire Hall, which will give children a chance to “meet and greet” the authors and have books autographed, says Stevens.

After lunch Nancy Wilcox Richards will read her book titled “How to Tame a Bully” from her Farmer Joe series.

Allison Maher was originally going to read her book “I Spy” but due to a family emergency she will not be able to make it.

Stevens explains, however, Maher will be stopping by the South Shore Regional Library in Bridgewater Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. to provide a “spy day” for the children.

She will read from her book as well as have the children take part in spy activities, says Stevens.

The Port Medway Parents and Tots Association is funding the reader’s festival.

They have also received funding from Canada Council for the Arts, Region of Queens Municipality, and from private donations.

The readers festival is open to all families, free of charge.

An adult must accompany children under the age of eight, adds Stevens.

Anyone planning to attend the festival must register by calling the South Shore Regional Library at 543-2548.

Questions may be directed to Stevens.
