THE ADVANCE

NovaNewsNow.com

Jennie Uhlman has been designing prom dresses every year since Grade 7 and is hoping that her love for fashion will take her to the Parson’s New School of Design in New York City after she graduates from North Queens Rural High School next year.
Uhlman, who won the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal this year, started sewing when she was in Grade 5 and designed her first set of outfits for her and her friends’ performance to a Destiny’s Child song.

“I really like making art and I find that when I design a dress, it’s like creating a piece of art,” she said.

Her favourite designer is John Galliano. Uhlman has designed at least two dresses each year, and created three dresses for the June 26 prom in Caledonia.

When designing prom dresses, Uhlman explained she tries to put the person’s personality into it.

She said one dress is designed with a “Greek goddess” style in mind, while another is very elegant to make the person wearing it stand out.

She described her dress as romantic. She added when she is making them, she is happy and feels like designing dresses is what she is suppose to be doing.

She will be creating a few dresses next year as well, she said.

With her future planned out, Uhlman said she wants to attend a design school, get her degree and then plans to create her own label and clothing line.

For now, anyone who would like something designed can contact Uhlman at 685-3860.
