Work explores marks on the landscape
Janet Larkman’s show land:marks consists of eight abstract oil paintings on canvas at ARTsPLACE in Annapolis Royal, in the Chapel Gallery (back space). The work explores the marks we make on the landscape and the transience of human existence. The paintings draw on the imagery of dolmens, standing stones, grave markers, and inukshuks -- stones that people since time immemorial have used to mark their presence on the land. The paintings also refer to the marks we make on the land when we remove nature’s own standing stones.
”No generation has ever had more power to mark the land” observes Larkman, “and no generation has ever pushed the land so close to its threshold of forgiveness."
The show runs to June 30th alongside an exhibition of large abstract mixed-media paintings by Ruth Bull in the Main Gallery entitled Ceremonies of the Makeshift.
