Weymouth Consolidated School received a national award in recognition of its quality physical education (QPE) program last week.
The school was awarded the National Gold Recognition Award by the Canadian Association for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD). This award acknowledged that WCS, its teachers and students were excellent role models for other Canadian schools.
The gold award indicates that WCS provided all students with quality physical education for a minimum of 100 minutes three to four times a week. The school led the advocacy initiative for the physical education of all Canadian children.
Quality physical education provided students at WCS this year with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and habits they needed to be physically active and to enjoy healthy active living now and as they get older.
QPE is taught by qualified and enthusiastic teachers and offers a well-planned program with many learning opportunities. This year, WCS provided students with the opportunity to play a variety of sports such as speed stacking, skating, soccer, basketball and baseball. A sports field day is being held this week that includes a variety of activities for all students.
Only 850 of Canada’s 15,000 schools applied and qualified for the award this year. Over the past 10 years quality physical education has declined and many schools in Canada are not providing the recommended 150 minutes per week of physical education to students.
CAHPERD congratulated Weymouth Consolidated School for showing leadership in providing Quality Physical Education.
