Teen charged with promoting fighting
A teenager has been arrested and charged with promoting prize fighting after the Yarmouth RCMP responded to a complaint of a male selling DVDs of organized street fights.
A copy of the DVD was seized and, according to police, contained numerous fights where teenagers would meet and have organized fights.
The fights were videotaped and then sold on DVD.
The 17-year-old male was released and is scheduled to appear in court later.
His name cannot be released under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act which prohibits the media from identifying people his age.
Under section 83 (1) of the Criminal Code it is illegal for anyone to engage, encourage, promote or be an active participant in a prize fight. A prize fight is defined as any encounter where two people meet by previous arrangement to fight. Any such fight must be sanctioned by authority of an athletic board or commission to be legal.
