Regional library celebrates Recreation Month
June is Recreation Month and the Western Counties Regional Library is celebrating with activities, reading programs and prize draws at all 10 of its branches. Recreation Month is intended to recognize and celebrate the contributions recreation makes to the quality of life in Nova Scotia.

Every branch library from Digby around to Lockeport is setting up a display highlighting recreation materials available at the library. This year’s theme is Recreation: Live It Everyday. Recreation is not limited to sports or any particular age group and includes all hobbies from running to origami, knitting to gardening, and wood carving to model building.

There will be an official kickoff on Friday, June 1 at all of the library’s branches open that day with a draw for prizes supplied by Recreation Nova Scotia. Throughout the month, library branches will be holding additional prize draws for items such as Frisbees and cooler bags.

Recreation Nova Scotia has set up a colouring contest for children ages 5 to 12. Participants can draw or sketch a picture about what recreation means to them. A random draw will take place on July 20. The winner receives a new bicycle and helmet from Canadian Tire.

For youth ages 12 to 15, there is a writing contest, where participants write a story about what recreation means to them. The story should be no less than 1,000 words, and no longer than 3,000 words. The winning entry receives a $150 gift certificate courtesy of Canadian Tire.

Entry forms for both contests are available online at www.recreationns.ns.ca www.recreationns.ns.ca or at your local library.

Each branch will be running its own programs and activities related to recreation
