THE COAST GUARD

Listeners from around the world are tuning in to community activities, music, sports and more through the cyber reaches of Shelburne Radio.

The station is based at Our House Youth and Wellness Centre and includes both live and prerecorded broadcasts called pod casts.

The youth are working hard getting their generation of pod casts out to the public and even had some friendly competition amongst themselves to see who will receive the most hits or the number of times a person has listened to their broadcast.

Various music depending on the DJ can be heard on the pod casts including music by Fallout boy 50 cent and A-Boy.

“We play a lot of what people want to hear,” says Daniel Mackay, who works 30 hours per week at Shelburne Radio.

“I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting what the top 30 will be,” he laughs.

He’s also gotten pretty good at editing, he admits, after working at the radio since its conception.

Katie Holmes is a grade nine student who makes many of the pod casts as well and recently broadcasted from the scene of the 30-hour famine at the Shelburne Regional High School.

The medium where the radio can and will be used is as limited as ones imagination.

When Mackay and Alex Faye another full time employee for the radio program first started working at Shelburne Radio right when it began, they were able to do call-in shows.

According to MacKay and Faye they had listeners calling, emailing or instant messaging in requests.

“Everyone seems to like what we are doing,” says Mackay, “I’d like to see Shelburne radio get big maybe even get other towns involved in it.”
