The life of Trevor Charles Brewster, formerly of Brooklyn was “celebrated” by a standing-room-only crowd of friends and family at a Trinity Anglican Church ceremony in Liverpool May 16.
The body of the 45-year-old former Brooklyn resident, who lived in Cole Harbour, was found in Burnside Park in Dartmouth on May 9.
A Queens County friend of Brewster, who wishes to remain anonymous, said, “Trevor was one of the friendliest guys I ever met. He always had a smile on his face and his manner was always warm and welcoming. With his upbeat and giving manner, he was one of those people that other people liked to be around, and he always seemed to have a crowd standing around him. He enjoyed all his friends as much as they did him and he treated everyone well, especially if you happened to grow up in Liverpool.”
Other Queens County residents echoed his sentiments but also wish to remain anonymous in honour of Brewster’s family.
The body of another man, Michael Knott was found four days earlier, which initially led Halifax police and RCMP, who are jointly investigating the incidents, to issue a safety warning to the urban area’s gay population.
However, a Halifax man was arrested May 15 in the United States and now faces charges allegedly related to the two murders.
Halifax police said May 16 Glen Douglas Race, 26, will be charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brewster and second-degree murder in the death of Knott.
Police had been searching for Brewster’s Honda Civic. According to police, Race used it to escape to the United States via New Brunswick and Quebec.
He was later arrested while attempting to cross the American and Mexican border in Texas. He has also been charged with allegedly killing a New York man.
Brewster, who graduated from Liverpool Regional High School, was a Steak and Stein Restaurant employee for 24 years. A memorial has been set up there in addition to virtual memorials on such community websites as facebook.com.
His obituary states he “loved pets of all kinds, especially his dog Polar.” He also loved to travel and gardening.
Family members, many of whom live in Queens County, are avoiding the media.
The friend sharply criticized the media for focusing, in his opinion on the sensationalist aspects of the tragedy.
“I'm sure his many, many friends are saddened by this tragic event. It's extremely unfortunate the media has seized on the 'National Enquirer' aspects of this tragedy, but I think it's important for people to know and remember what a special and unique person he was.”
