‘Westport’ goes to Eastport
Coast Guards examine similarities, differences in procedures
The Coast Guard cutter ‘Westport’ was in Eastport, Me., last week in a two-day training session with the U.S. Coast Guard that looked at each other’s practices and techniques.
The session began with classroom and on the water sessions April 25, and moved into practice training April 26 that also included participation by a Cormorant helicopter from the 413 Squadron in Greenwood.
“It’s something the cast guards on both sides wanted to do,” crew captain Rodney Barnaby said on Sunday.
Coast guard crews looked at putting pumps aboard vessels to remove water, man overboard procedures, and differences in buoy systems between the two countries. As well, the Cormorant was used to show Canadian practices for lifting fishermen and sailors from boats.
Also participating was a 47-foot American cutter from Jonesport and a crew from the coast guard station on Campobello Island.
