April 15, 2007 to April 21, 2007, continued Griffin, Michael Maurice “Mike” Cpl., 45, died April 17, 2007, after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. He did not die with cancer, he lived with cancer. Mike could see beyond the disease and continued to make his mark into the future. He remained focused on life not death until the end. Hopes and dreams once measured in years were shortened to moments, and those moments are our memories to carry into the future. Mike was predeceased by his loving father Gerald. He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate Jill (Canam), who walked with him every step of the way. He is also survived by the woman who gave him life, and stood by him in death, his Mom Johanna (nee Wallace) Bennett (Arnold). Mike leaves behind his two children, Kate and Zack, his pride and joy. You were his world and now as you age and mature it is your father’s legacy that will shine in you. Mike is survived by sisters, Nancy (Charles) Muise, Lorraine (Darren) Pittman, Janice Griffin (Brian Bridgeo). After graduating from high school, Mike attended the Sault College of Engineering Technology. He worked in geological and environmental research across Northern Canada from 1982-1990, allowing him to enjoy his passion for canoeing, camping and working outdoors. Mike started his career with the RCMP in 1990 with his graduation from Depot. His postings took him to various places across the country including Whitehorse and Port Hawkesbury. He accepted a posting for residential policing in Mosher River where he met his wife Jill. In 1999 they moved to Truro where Mike joined the Drug section dedicating five years to making the streets a safer place. Mike was committed not only to the job but to the communities he served. He was not just a regimental number, people in the communities remember Mike, the man. His desire to make a difference in policing took Mike back to the Regina Depot as a Police Defensive Tactics Instructor – a job that became a passion. The RCMP taught Mike honor and commitment which he was able to give back fully when teaching Cadets using his knowledge, skills and sharing his experiences gaining him much deserved respect. His “When you’ve got nothing left, show me what you’ve got” slogan was, and will continue to be, an inspiration. Mike and Jill relocated back to Truro prior to his death. Martial arts played a special role in Mike’s life. Tae Kwon Do and Aikido gave him strength, both physical and mental. His training and skills were shared with many young people inspiring them to become all that they can. Mike and Jill shared many interests but their love of animals was their forte. They always chose the most needing animal and turned them into one of the family. When cancer steals lives it cannot steal spirits. Mike’s death and dying has shown us the true meaning of courage, love and devotion. His spirit was always positive, full of life and laughter, an inspiration for us all. While all of us who knew Mike can’t imagine the world without him in it, we know the world is a better place because he was in it. “Shared grief is half the sorrow but happiness when shared is doubled”. Author unknown. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of 3 North and ICU at the Colchester Regional Hospital, and to Dr. Henderson and Ann McKim of the Palliative Care Program for all their care and support. Special thanks to family and friends who helped during this difficult time. Donations may be made to the SPCA/Humane Society or Cancer Research. A funeral mass celebrating Mike’s life will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince Street, Truro on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow the service in Campbell Hall. Remains are resting at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 with parish prayers at 8:00 p.m. On line condolences may be sent to our website at www.colchestercommunity.com
