GREASE FIRES
Grease and or cooking oil fires are the cause of many domestic fires in Nova Scotia. The leading cause of grease fires is inattention. I
f grease in a pot or pan catches fire;
1. Smother the flames by covering the pan with a lid.
2. Turn off the heat.
3. Use baking soda only on shallow grease fires. On deep fat it causes splattering.
4. Do not throw water on a grease fire.
5. Do not put flour on a fire, flour is explosive.
6. Do not turn on an over head fan. This could spread the fire through the entire building.
7. Never leave cooking unattended.
Within the past several weeks the Yarmouth Fire Department was paged out for a structure fire. Although this time it was a minor blaze, there was some damage in the kitchen area. It appears that this was a grease fire, one of a number in this area in very recent times. If a person is cooking with oil many of the above preventive items will help keep any fire small. Please be careful as you cook on your stove.
RATEPAYERS MEETING
The annual ratepayers meeting of the East Pubnico Fire Department will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2 p.m. at the East Pubnico fire hall.
BOWLING
East Pubnico has taken a 2-1 lead in the best 3 of 5 against Carleton with a 1524-1520 win last week. East Pubnico's Curley Kristensen rolled highs of 134 and 353.
DATE IN HISTORY
April 24, 2005 although only two years ago a spectacular fire on the Peterson Road destroyed several buildings and equipment. A large barn was saved as firefighters worked both inside and out. Mutual aid tankers were paged from Port Maitland, Wedgeport and Lakes and District. Several explosions occurred from burning tires and gas tanks, keeping firefighters back for a short time.
SHORT VISIT WITH A FORMER DEPUTY CHIEF
While in Kentville last week we were pleased to meet up with former YFD deputy chief Fred Dyke. Although not 100 per cent healthy he is able to drive his car and get around.
SYMPATHY
We extend our deep sympathy to Bill and Barbara Singer on the death of their daughter Barbara.
YFD VETERANS HOSPITALIZED
We are sorry to write that former chief Dave LeBlanc and Neptune veteran Rene Surette are still in Yarmouth hospital. A bit late we understand that Neptune veteran George MacDonald spent a short time in the hospital but is now home.
AND THE WINNER IS
The winner of the Firefighters’ Museum Easter egg hunt was Rawdon Dulong. Congratulations Rawdon.
