April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007, continued Evelyn Marie Carver (Barkhouse) - 91, of Grand View Manor, Berwick, formerly of New Minas, passed away peacefully Tuesday April 10, 2007 at Grand View Manor. Born in Medford, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Charlotte (Conrad) Barkhouse. She loved her home and family. Always caring, she led a full life and was an active member of the Kingsway Assembly Church in Kentville. Due to her failing health in her later years, she was unable to do the things that were dear and close to her heart. She was a loving mother and will be sadly missed by her surviving children, Douglas (Mary) Dartmouth; Barbara (Ron West) Kentville; Chester Jr. (Dorothy) Winnipeg; Paul (Jeanette) Dartmouth; Margaret (Kees Vandyke) Canning; Jean Morawski, Victoria B.C.; Joseph, Berwick; Sharon (Everett Dixon) Steam Mill; Elaine (Nelson Lutz) Habitant; Wanda (Keith Rowland) Puslinch, O.N.; David (Mary Ann) Kentville; Nancy, Habitant; Dale (Nancy) Alberta; Debbie, Kitchener, O.N.; Timothy, Woodstock, O.N.; 38 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; she will be missed always by her brother, Alfred; sisters, Violet, Reta, Dorothy and Doris; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Chester; infant daughter, Darlene Mary; brothers, Aubrey and Wilbert. Visitation for Mrs. Caver was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 12 from H. C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 5 Leverett Ave, Kentville (902-678-2151) from where a funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 13. Rev. Elizabeth Johnson officiated. Interment took place in Habitant Cemetery, followed by a reception at Anglican Church Hall, Canning. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007, continued SURETTE, John Donald – 83, Yarmouth, and formerly of Comeau’s Hill, died on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born March 28, 1924 in Comeau’s Hill, he was a son of the late John Leo and Francoise “Fanny” (Fitzgerald) Surette. He was a retired lobster fisherman, having also worked in the carpentry and construction business. Donald enjoyed bluegrass music, boat building, and spending time in his workshop. He is survived by his children, Pauline (David “Midge”) Rodgerson, Overton; Carolyn (Gerry) Newell, Truro Bradford (Linda), Elaine (Franklyn) O’Connell, both of Little River Harbour; Allan (Judy), Surette’s Island; Patricia (Norbert) Comeau, Pubnico; Sandra, Waterville; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Joseph “Clinton”, Wakefield, Mass.; sisters, Alvina Pothier and Loretta (Norman) Saulnier, both of Yarmouth; Regina (Willard) LeBlanc, Wedgeport; a son-in-law, Wayne Leslie, Port Coquitlam, BC. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Frances (DeViller) Surette; a daughter, Janice Leslie; brothers, Charles, Bertell, Bert, Frank Herbert “Herbie”. Visitation took place from 2-4, 7-9 Friday, April 13 with prayers at 8 PM, followed by the funeral at 11 AM, Saturday, April 14, all in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Saint Gabriel’s Parish Cemetery, Comeau’s Hill. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007, continued SEARS, Percy Raymond - 79, Port Maitland, passed away April 11, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on February 22, 1928, he was a son of the late Raymond and Eva (Delaney) Sears. Percy was an active member of the Bayview Baptist Church in Port Maitland and also a member of the choir. Percy enjoyed many activities over the years including motorcycling with his wife and friends. One of his favourite and most enjoyable occupations was flying a water bomber for the Department of Lands and Forests. He was also an owner of his own airplane many years ago, having held both private and commercial pilot's licenses. In later years, he took great pleasure in traveling with his RV in company with many close friends. He also had many enjoyable outings on his ATV with fellow ATV friends. He was a kind and loving husband, a devoted father to Heather and grandfather to Spencer. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Heather Muise, and grandson, Spencer Muise. He was predeceased by his brother, Walter. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. There was visitation from 7-8 p.m. Friday, April 13 and a memorial service was held on Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. , Pastor Steven Hopper officiated, both in Sweeny's Funeral Home. Burial took place in Port Maitland Beaver River Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007, continued HARVEY, Rosa May - 84, of Middleton, NS, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2007 at Grand View Manor Nursing Home, Berwick, NS. Born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late J.H. and Alice May (Taylor) Penney. Educated in Carbonear, NL, her love and pursuit of educational opportunities took her to Memorial, Mount A, McGill, Dalhousie and Acadia Universities. Rosa’s early career was in social work in Montreal. Later she enjoyed a teaching career which spanned 30 years and was well known for her devotion to children with special needs. Rosa had a passion for traveling and experiencing many cultures around the world. Her significant contributions to her community resulted in her being the recipient of numerous awards some of which are as follows: she was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International; “Life Time Community Award” to honor and celebrate the life of a Mount Allison Alumnus in recognition of achievement to people who serve as role models to students; Provincial Volunteer Award for the town of Middleton in 1991; The Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal in 1993. Rosa was the chairperson and driving force behind the Middleton and Area Friends of the Library Society which resulted in the renaming of the Middleton Library in 2006 to become the Rosa M. Harvey Library (Middleton Area). Some of her other achievements were: Chair of the Board of Trustees of St. John’s United Church; †Chair for the committee for establishing a nursing home in Middleton; past regent and other offices in the I.O.D.E. as well as many other volunteer organizations. She is survived by her husband, Charles; son, Dan (Joan), Ottawa, Ont., daughters, Penney Jean (Robert) Stevens, Toronto, Ont., Gayle Harvey, Halifax, NS and Lee-Ann (Hal) Baird, New Minas, NS. Grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah Jane, Jeff, Mark, Cheryl, Haley and Evan. A Celebration of Rosa’s Life will be held at a later date at St. John’s United Church, Middleton, NS. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007, continued MILLER, Robert L. - MWO SSM CD, RCAF & CAF (RET.) 1928-2007 - Passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with leukemia. Born in Clarence West, Nova Scotia on 24 May 1928. Son of Ray Lockhart and Barbara (Harlow) Miller, married Lorna Ruth Guest in 1949. Lovingly remembered by his wife, Lorna and five children, Mavis (Keith), Steve (Mary Ellen), Nancy (Stan), James (Lynn), Janice (Andy), and nine grandchildren, Andrea, Darren, Steph, Allie, Alicia, Hunter, Tyler, Brandon and Kyle. Dear brother to Charles, Jean, Ann and Margaret. Bob and Lorna were transferred overseas twice, 1951 to Odiham, England and 1960 to Marville, France. He served with distinction in the Royal Canadian Air Force and retired from the military in 1973. He held Commercial Pilots’ and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licenses which he applied following his military retirement. He was employed by DeHavilland Aircraft in Downsview, Ontario as a Production Test Flight Supervisor. Following this, he worked for nine pleasant years at the former CKBB radio in Barrie. Bob will always be remembered as a quiet, strong and dignified gentleman. Bob’s passion for aviation and his love of flying were evident throughout his life. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends. Friends visited for an informal gathering at Steckley Gooderham Funeral Home (30 Worsley Street at Clapperton) in Barrie on Thursday, April 12, 2007, until they gathered in the Chapel. Reception followed in the lower level after Chapel gathering. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “R.V.H. Regional Cancer Care Centre” or “The Oncology Department of R.V.H.”.

Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Clem and Effie (Brewster) Kennedy. She enjoyed music, especially playing the organ, the mouth organ and the Jew’s harp. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Frank, and a sister, Millie (Paul) Smith, North Kingston. She was predeceased by four sisters, May Little, Dolly Little, Nancy Barron and Florence Comeau; three brothers, Howard, Richard and Warren. Visitation was held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2007 in St. John’s Anglican Church, Port Williams. Reverend David Garrett officiated. Born on November 16, 1915, in Pubnico, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Sarah (Davis) Lennox. She was a member of Pleasant Lake Baptist Church. Edna was a homemaker all her working life. She is survived by daughters, Dorothy (Bennett) d'Entremont, Pubnico; Myrna (Darrell) Allen, North Kemptville; Brenda Cosman, Yarmouth; stepdaughter, Laurena Goodwin, Dayton; sons, George Hamilton, Alan Hamilton, both of Yarmouth; brother, Elmer Lennox, Central Argyle; sisters, Dorothy Hulsman, Fredericton, N.B.; Elinor Lennox Hines; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, William; son, Douglas; stepson, Richard; brother, Albert "Bud" Lennox, and sister, Lottie Goodwin. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007, continued Frank Lloyd Stuart – 82, formerly of Kentville, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2007 in the Villa Acadienne Nursing Home, Meteghan. Born in Halls Harbour, Kings County, he was a son of the late Cyrus and Laura (MacDonald) Stuart. He had been employed with the Nova Scotia Sanatorium, Kentville, retiring after 41 years. Frank was also an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He is survived by a son, Donald; two sisters, Kathleen Baker, Lower Sackville; Blanche Atwell, Scotts Bay; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by seven brothers, Howard, Wells, Arthur, Ernest, Kenneth, Gordon and George. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A graveside memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in the West Halls Harbour Cemetery, Kings County. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007, continued Frederick J. Payne - 75, of Kentville passed away Sunday, April 8, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born September 18, 1931 in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Dr. Guy and Eloise (Fitch) Payne. Surviving him is his wife, the former, Barbara Ann (Sucy); sons: Stephen Eric (Linda), Scarborough, Maine; Daniel Alan (Susan), Emerald, Australia; Jon David (Janet), Kentville; daughter, Jody Debra, Brockton, Massachusetts; six grandsons: Jeffrey, Eric, Cody, Colton, Ethan and Isaac; brother, Dr. John Payne (Natalie), Pasquag, Rhode Island. He was predeceased by half brother, Dr. Guy Payne Jr.; half sister, Helen Brailor. Fred graduated from New Lebanon Central School, Lebanon Springs, New York; served in the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer USS Robert A. Owens DDE 827. He also attended Syracuse University and the University of Maine. He worked as a forester with the Pennsylvania Department of Lands and Forests and as a consulting forester with the New England Forestry Foundation of Vermont. After completing a master’s degree he joined the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests in 1961 as a waterfowl and wetlands biologist. Spending one year as Waterfowl Project leader with the Vermont Department of Fish and Game in Addison, Vermont. He returned to Nova Scotia in 1965, received a Merit Award from the Atlantic Society of Fish and Wildlife Biologists. He then retired having been Manager of Wildlife Resources in 1998 from the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources. After retirement he did some consulting and was an Honorary Research Associate at Acadia University in Wolfville. In 2006, a monument was erected at the 5000 acre Missiquash Marsh which was dedicated in his name by his peers in recognition for his outstanding contribution to wetland and environmental conservation in Atlantic Canada. Fred was a member of Ducks Unlimited and other nature oriented groups. Being an avid hunter and fisherman he revered nature’s own cathedral and respected those natural systems that support all life. After his retirement, Fred enjoyed writing and the company of his friends. He will always be remembered as an original thinker, gentleman, friend and mentor by many. No visitation or funeral service by family request. In place of attending a funeral, the deceased requests friends to set aside a few hours to smell their favorite roses in memory. Mildred was a member of Yarmouth Wesleyan Church. She was a former member of the Women's Institute and the New Horizon Seniors Club in Argyle. She is survived by daughter, Donna Andrews-Jeffery, Halifax; sons, Daniel (Joyce), Cambridge, Ont.; Jack (Catherine), New Minas; Nathan (Patricia), Welland, Ont.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and half-sister, Pearl Peach, Massachusetts, U.S.A. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert K.; sisters, Grace and Beatrice, and brother, Charles Elliott. Visitation was held Thursday, April 12 in Sweeny's Funeral Home, 567 Main St., Yarmouth. Funeral service was held Friday, April 13 in Yarmouth Wesleyan Church with Rev. John Symonds officiating. Interment in Arcadia Cemetery. Family flowers only.
