April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 Donald Beverly “Don” Spinney – 73, of North Alton, Kings County, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2007 at home. Born in Canning, Kings County, he was a son of the late Gilbert and Ethel (Hales) Spinney. He had been self-employed as a farmer, a construction contractor and developer. Don enjoyed music. He played several instruments and in recent years created a CD. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by five sisters, Joyce (Mrs. Kenneth Carey), Hamilton, Ontario; Reverend Ardythe Ashe, Black Point, Halifax County; Marguerite (Mrs. Keith Rogers), Bridgewater, Lunenburg County; Rita (Mrs. Kenneth Jess) and Joanne (Mrs. Michael Johnston), both of Coldbrook, Kings County; three brothers, Eugene (Sheila) and Greg (Dorothy), both of Coldbrook; Frank (Donna), Greenwood; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Sheila Mildred Rogers and a brother, James. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville where a funeral service followed by a reception was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2007. Reverend Ardythe Ashe officiated. Burial took place in the Hillaton Cemetery, Kings County. Family flowers only by request. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 Johansson, Hilda G. – 94, passed away in Ladysmith B.C. on April 8, 2007 in the Ladysmith and District General Hospital. Born in Culloden, N.S. on Feb. 1,1913 to the late Lea Ambrose and Oreta May (Campbell) Stark. She is survived by her daughter Rondi (Richard) Sturrock, Ladysmith, B.C., sister June Smith, Digby, N.S.; Grandchildren, Curtis Sturrock, Langley, B.C.; Kyle Sturrock, Vancouver, B.C.. She was predeceased by her husband Alf Eugen Johansson, son Wayne Torsten Johansson; brothers Hedley, Curtis, Nathan and Otis; sisters Sylvia (infant) and Ferne Webber. A private graveside service was held on April 11 at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory can be made to the Canadian Bible Society or a charity of choice. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 MARTIN, Joseph Lomer 85, Chester Street, Yarmouth passed away on April 8, 2007. Born in Yarmouth on December 10, 1921, Lomer was the son of the late Herman Martin and Sarah (LaBerge). Besides his parents he was predeceased by infant daughter Gisel; sisters, Vivian, Lorraine and Patricia. Surviving are his wife, Frances, sons Ray (Pat), PEI; daughter, Mary-Anne Joan (Bernard) Miller; son Paul (Irene), Saulnierville; a sister Mary, BC; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He attended Salmon River school, the Yarmouth Academy and Universite Ste. Anne. He worked on the schooner The Princess Arlene, he was a Best Yeast salesman, he worked on the Bluenose form 1956 to his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed working with wood and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 Tuesday in Huskilson’s Funeral Home in Yarmouth, with prayers at 8 pm. Funeral mass will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, April 10, from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, Albert St. Father John MacPherson officiating. Interment will be in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. Reception followed at Notre Dame Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Born September 26, 1930, in Hortonville, Kings Co., she was a daughter of the late Walter and Thelma (Card) Coffill. Greta is survived by her husband of 49 years, Roy; her favourite niece, Susanne Smith, Mount Uniacke; sisters, Lillian (Gordon) Davidson, Gaspereau; Iva (Marvin) Rafuse, Upper Vaughan; Linda (Ronald) McBay, Grand Pré; brothers, Glen, Windsor; Ray, Toronto; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her twin brother, Gordon, and brothers, John and Ralph. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 Wilfred Lawrence Carver - 88, Morristown, Kings Co., died Monday April 9, 2007 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Stanley Section, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late Maurice and Mabel (Mader) Carver. Wilfred was a retired farmer, an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved working in his woodlot. He was a member of the Morristown United Baptist Church. Surviving are his son, Glendon (Kathleen) Carver; daughter Diane (Glendon) Harris, all of Morristown; sisters Marjorie Mailman and Helen Pentz, both of Bridgewater; stepmother Mildred Carver, Hillsview Acres Home for Special Care, Middlefield; grandchildren: Kevin Carver; Angela Carver, Julia (Jeff) Robar, Natalie (Dave) LeBlanc; great-grandchildren: Jacob Robar; Jocelyn Robar; Joshua LeBlanc; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Carrie (Lutz) Carver; grandson, Wilfred Frank Carver; brothers Roy and Maurice Jr., sisters Jean and Anne. There was no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service for Wilfred was held Wednesday, April 11, at 2 p.m. in H. C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial Street, Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900). Rev. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 Ella Muriel Lee – 80, of Kentville, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Urbania, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late Creighton and Maude (Vaughan) Rose. She had been employed with the housekeeping department of Towers and later worked for several years as a cook at Camp Aldershot, from where she retired. She was a member of Bethany Memorial Baptist Church, Aldershot, and enjoyed knitting, music and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Christina (Anthony “Tony”) Graves, Kentville; three sons, Murray (Gloria), Berwick; Arthur (Audry), Kentville and James (Julia), Sheffield Mills; a sister, Laura Pudsey, Greenwich; two brothers, Edgar Rose, Kentville and Earl (Margaret) Rose, Oshawa, Ontario; six grandchildren, Greg, Kelly, Leeann, Tammy, Mitchell and Melissa; four great-grandchildren, Danielle, Jessica, J.C. and Jaden; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Murray; two sisters, Edith Moore and Ruby Wood; a brother, George Rose. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service followed by a reception was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Pastor Thelma McLeod officiatied. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 GOULDEN, George “Ronald” Laurie, 90, of Ingomar, passed away in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co. on Monday, April 9, 2007. Born in Gunning Cove, he was a son of the late David and Helen (Rapp) Goulden. Ronald was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a fisherman during his working life. He was a member of the Leisure Hour Club in Port Saxon as well as a member of the Ingomar and Roseway Fire Department for twenty years. Ronald was active in all community activities. He is survived by his wife, the former Sylvia Whitman; son, Daniel (Judy), Dartmouth; four step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother Nelson and sister Evelyn. Funeral service was held on Thursday, April 12, 2007 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne with Rev. Cindy Dunnett officiating. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 Lawrence Berton Huntley – 63, of Scotts Bay, Kings County, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2007 in the QE II Health Sciences Centre – Victoria General Site, Halifax. Born in Scotts Bay, he was a son of the late Vernon and Dorothy (Dykens) Huntley. He had been employed as a finish carpenter and enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, camping, the beach and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife and best friend, the former Brenda Veinotte, two sons, Dennis (Mary), Delta, British Columbia; Emerson (Gillian), Berwick; five sisters, Brenda Barkhouse and Mabel Tupper, both of Scotts Bay; Marion (Harold) Power and LaVerne (Arthur) Dowell, both of Coldbrook; Berneice (Ronald) Ward, Centreville; seven brothers, Howard (Juanita), New Minas; Kenneth (Frances), Pereaux; Vaughn (Elaine), Sackville; Robert (Elizabeth), Philip (Gwen), Everett (Louise) and Daniel (Donna), all of Scotts Bay; three grandchildren, Josie, Brenna and Ashley; an unborn grandson, due in July; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Mildred. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a funeral service, followed by a reception was held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2007. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 ANDREWS, Mildred Louise - 87, Evergreen Nursing Home, Kentville, died April 9, 2007, in the nursing home. Born in Kelly's Cove, Yarmouth Co., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Leta Belle (Nickerson) Smith. Mildred was a member of Yarmouth Wesleyan Church. She was a former member of the Women's Institute and the New Horizon Seniors Club in Argyle. She is survived by daughter, Donna Andrews-Jeffery, Halifax; sons, Daniel (Joyce), Cambridge, Ont.; Jack (Catherine), New Minas; Nathan (Patricia), Welland, Ont.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert K.; sisters, Grace and Beatrice, and brother, Charles Elliott. April 8, 2007 to April 14, 2007 Gerda van den Hof - 82, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2007, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Zwolle, the Netherlands, she was a daughter of the late Roelof and Anna Berendina (Willering) van der Stouwe. After the Second World War Gerda aided in relocating Dutch children who had been evacuated from their families. She was also a volunteer aid worker who helped at house clean up and the care of sick families. Along with her husband, she was a founding member of the Kentville Christian Reformed Church. She was a former member of the Weston Women’s Institute and the Berwick & District Lionettes Club. Gerda was a loving wife, devoted mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. The three most important things in her life were family, faith and her friends. She was a gracious, sweet lady who will be always remembered by her family for her hospitality, meals and holidays spent in her home. Surviving are her husband, Michiel “Mike” van den Hof, Berwick; daughter, Annette (Paul) Iannaccone, Ventura, California; sons, Michiel “Mike” (Debbie) van den Hof, New Minas, Kings Co.; Ralph (Patty) van den Hof, Somerset, Kings Co.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Greeth Fleurke and Miny (Geert) Bisschop, all of the Netherlands; Hetty (Hank) Bosveld, Lakeville, Kings Co.; several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 13, in the H. C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900). There was a service in celebration of Gerda’s life which was held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 16, in the Kentville Christian Reformed Church, 118 Oakdene Avenue, Kentville.
