Helena R. Potter — 45, of Gull Island, Queens County, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 3, 2007 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, with her family at her side. Born in Liverpool, she was a daughter of Georgina (Theriau)(Whynot) Weatherbee (Calvin) of New Minas and the late Arnold Whynot Sr. Helena was an avid gardener who was known for her “green thumb”. She enjoyed bingo, cards and NASCAR. She loved cats and especially her family. She is survived by her husband, Perry; daughter, Candace, at home; sons, Chris (Brenda) of Liverpool, and Ryan of Toronto; sister, Debbie (Steven) Christie of Northfield; brother, Arnold Jr. (Elizabeth Lohnes) of East Berlin. Cremation is under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A Celebration of Helena's life will take place at a later date. No flowers by request. HOLLETT, Earnest Jr., Falmouth, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 in Hants Community Hospital, with his family by his side. Born in Halifax on November 4, 1943, he was a son of the late Ernest Hollett Sr. and Jessie Lucy (Kearley) Hollett. Ernie enlisted in the Canadian Navy when he was just 17 and retired after 34 years of service. He was very proud when he received the Order of Military Merit in 1986 from the Governor General of Canada. Ernie was a life member of the Lions Club, Windsor, member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 9, Windsor, and founding member of the West Hants Children’s Wish Foundation. He was very active in minor hockey, especially watching his grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and a lifelong Boston Bruins fan. Ernie will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marlene (Porter); daughter, Wendy (Quinn) Rick, Union Corner, and son, Cary (Shelley), Belmont, Hants Co.; grandchildren, Chad Hollett, Broady and Carlee Rick and Maddison Hollett; brothers, Ronald (Betty), Trenton, and David, Lockeport. He was predeceased by brothers, John, Charles and Peter in infancy. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service was held on Friday, April 6, 2007 in the United Baptist Church, Town Road, Falmouth, with Rev. Wayne Merrill officiating. Private family burial was held in Center Falmouth Cemetery, Falmouth. Donations in memory of Ernie can be made to the West Hants Children’s Wish Foundation, 1839 Belmont Rd., Newport, Hants Co., N.S. TOWNSEND, Leslie James “Bubba”, 46, North East Point, Shelburne Co., died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at home. Born in Shelburne, he was a son of Sarah “Sally” (Balkam) Townsend, Clark’s Harbour, and the late Leslie Henry “Sonny” Townsend (Barrington), and step-son of Cecil Brannen, Clark’s Harbour. He is survived by sisters, Shirley Ann (Larry) Hopkins, Oak Park, Eileen (Allen) Nickerson, Juanita (James) Nickerson, North East Point, Doris Swaine, Port Saxon; brother, Cory (Alana) Barrington; nieces, Michelle (Vernon) Goreham, Oak Park, Tanya Nickerson, Sackville, Nicole (Marty) Atwood, Clark’s Harbour, Amelia Swaine, Port Saxon, Rylee Townsend, Barrington; nephews, Josh Nickerson, North East Point, Michael Swaine, Port Saxon; great nieces, Jessica Goreham, Ashley Goreham, Oak Park, Emily Doyle, North East Point. DOUCETTE, Arthur Robert - 62, Pinkney's Point, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born September 21, 1944, in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Robert and Doris (Surette) Doucette. He was a retired fisherman. Surviving are sons, Jim (Allison) Doucette, Ottawa, Ont.; John Doucette, Edmonton, Alta.; Scott Doucette (Lisa Jacquard), Arcadia; grandchildren, Tristan, Xavier and Makayla; his former wife, Jeannette Warner-Doucette; sisters, Viola (Daniel) Saulnier, Pinkney's Point; Doreen (Bill) Surette, Stouffville, Ont., and Wanda Mollison, Halifax. Visitation took place from 2-4 p.m. and again from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, with prayers at 8 p.m., in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 9, in Saint Raphael's Catholic Church, Pinkney's Point, Rev. Wieslaw Papuga officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Marie Viola Davidson (Legge) - 76, of Auburn, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2007 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Sheffield Mills, she was a daughter of the late William Bennett and Beulah (Bennett) Houghton. Marie will be remembered as a special mother and grandmother. She always had a wonderful, warm smile. Marie enjoyed crocheting. She was happy volunteering a lot of her time canvassing for Valley Regional Hospital. Marie is survived by her loving and caring husband Douglas; daughters, Janice (Paul) Rhynold, Canning; Althea Hastey, Auburn; Linda (Rev. William) Patterson, Port Lorne; step-daughter, VickiLynn Davidson, Windsor; brother, Sheldon (Peggy) Bennett, Canning; sister, Wilda (Glen) Sheffield, New Brunswick; grandchildren, Dean (Shelley) Corkum, Dylan Patterson, Dawson Patterson and great- grandchildren, Hannah and Josephine Corkum. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence Legge; brothers, Laurice and Boyd Bennett; step-father, Merville Houghton. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 8, from H. C. David Alexander Furlotte, Sr. – 87, Windsor, Hants Co., formerly of Halls Harbour, Kings Co., passed away peacefully Saturday, April 7, 2007, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born in Jacquet River, N.B., he was a son of the late Simon and Margaret (Laviolette) Furlotte. He is survived by son, David Jr. (Janet) Furlotte, Mount Uniacke; grandsons, Tim, Herring Cove; and Kirk, Vancouver, B.C.; sisters, Charlotte Conrad, Halifax and Betty Sweetland, Halifax; brothers, Vincent (Pauline), London, Ont.; and Don (Lois), Bridgewater; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his wife, the former Lucy Elaine Veinot (February 8, 2005); brothers, Alban (Jean), Wallace (Etta), and James; brothers-in-law, Wilson Conrad and Ronnie Sweetland. Elva Maud Alexander — 94, of Liverpool, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2007, at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Liverpool, she was the daughter of the late William and Sophie (Nickerson). Elva had a great love for her family. She is survived by, daughter, Marie Zwicker of Windsor; sons: Raymond of Charleston, Billy (Donna) of Mill Village, and Dennis (Margaret) of Windsor; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, James; son-in-law, Harold Zwicker; daughter-in-law, Jean; brothers: Robie and Regional; niece, Charlotte Oickle. Jane “Jean” Schnare — 82, of Brooklyn, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, Saturday, April 7, 2007. Born in Dundee, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Scott) Millar. During World War II, Jane was a former employee of Harley & Sons in Dundee as a cashier and later worked for the local Board of Trade in Jute Control as a clerical operator. She immigrated to Canada in 1946 following the war and worked for Bowater Mersey Paper Company Ltd., Brooklyn, and STENPRO of Liverpool, before accepting a position with Department of Natural Resources as a Field Unit Accounting clerk from which she retired after twenty years of service. She is survived by her son, Kevin Evans of Brooklyn. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. John Oliver Atkinson — 72, of Liverpool, died Saturday, April 7, 2007, husband of Peggy, father of Shane (Liverpool), Lisa of Los Angeles, Melissa (John) of London, England. Born in Yorktown, Ontario, he was a son of the late Gordon and Olive (Anderson) Atkinson. John joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954 and was trained as an aerial photographer. He served on Argus aircraft photographing Russian Ships off the East Coast. Following his honorable discharge in 1964, he was employed with the National Film Board of Canada Exhibition Commission and the Government Photo Center. John was a renowned photographic muralist and his work can be seen around the world in museums and Canadian embassies. While his work was presented in 1967 at EXPO in Montreal at the Canadian Pavilion, Yousef Karsh requested John to print his photographs for exhibitions. Also, in 1967, the book, A Year of the Land was published of which John was formally recognized for by then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau for his contribution to Canadian Photography. In 1969, John’s work was once again presented at the Canadian Pavilion at the Tokyo World’s Fair. John’s work can still be seen today in various books published by the NFB. John was well known in hockey circles in Ottawa and the Atlantic region, coaching various teams from minor hockey, Ottawa 67 Jr. “B” and including the Ottawa Gee Gee C.I.A.U. After retiring in 1989, John continued teaching summer hockey school in both regions developing young talent especially goaltenders and scouting for a number of major junior teams. The last 16 years, John was also involved with the Nova Scotia Major Midget AAA South Shore Mustangs. John served in a number of different positions, but most frequently as a goaltender coach as “his goaltenders” held a special place. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 14, in Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool; Rev. Joanne McFadden officiated. BAKER, Anita Catherine - Halifax. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Anita C. Baker (Hines) on April 7, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit of Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Carleton, on April 4, 1922, she grew up in Carleton and Tusket Falls. She worked for EK Spinney's Hardware Store in Yarmouth before moving to Halifax with her husband. There she worked in accounting at Stadacona, McDemaid Insurance and Kelly's Luggage. Anita was an avid bridge player, a member of IODO, did volunteer work and enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. She is survived and loved by her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Lester Poole, Sand Beach, Yarmouth, and by many special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Harold; her parents, Richard and Goldie (Nichols) Hines; brother, Vernon, and sister, Lorena. Visitation was held Monday, April 9 from 7-9 p.m., and the funeral service was held Tuesday, April 10 at 1 p.m., Pastor Eric Whitehouse officiated, both were held in Sweeny's Funeral Home. Burial took place in Chebogue Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. A reception followed the burial in Temple United Baptist Church on Argyle Street.
