Y.F.D dispatchers have busy weekend
During the spring grass fire season there are four staff member, one per shift, who is kept very busy on radio and telephone. These dispatchers receive calls from as far away as Port LaTour and the Clare District.
It is not uncommon to get multiple calls, making their job more difficult. The weekend of March 31/April 1, 27 calls were received at the YFD Dispatch Center. Correct address must be taken and in turn dispatched to the various departments and there are also conversations between apparatus, dispatch and other responding departments.
As usual a good job by very efficient members.
AUXILIARY CRAFT SALE
Probably as there was so many events going on last weekend, the attendance at the annual YFD auxiliary craft sale was down from previous years. The auxiliary wish to thank those who rented tables and to the visitors who took part in the two day event.
FORMER CHIEF BACK IN HOSPITAL
We are sorry to report that former Yarmouth fire chief Dave LeBlanc has returned to the Yarmouth Hospital for further tests. Our best wishes for your return to good health.
BOWLING ROLL-OFFS
Neptune put the finishing touches to the Naiad team 4-0, with a 1520-1490 win. Neptune has won the league standings as well as the “A” Section.
In the “B” finals East Pubnico has taken a 1-0 lead over Carleton winning 1598-1510.
The “C” Section has also declared a winner – Salmon River 1963 – Y.F.D. Ladies 1321 which gives Salmon River team the section win.
Curley Kristensen rolled both high single 136 and triple of 350.
VILLA HELP CARE WORKERS RECEIVINBG TRAINING
Approximately 105 employees of Villa St. Joseph spent a number of hours at the Yarmouth Fire station and training area. Talks by Deputy Fire Marshal Frank Savage and Fire Inspector Ryan Thibeau on safety and evacuation with class room slide information was followed by fire extinguisher practice on live fire at the rear of the firehall.
DATE IN HISTORY
April 14 – 1947 – The Millard Box Factory which was located on Water Street at the bottom of Catherine Street was badly damaged by fire. The alarm sounded at 11:30 a.m. and the department was on scene until 5:30 p.m..
At one time after production was halted. The wooden structure was converted to a youth center, but it also met the same fate as the box factory.
