He was the son of Edward Butler and Eliza Jane (Burke) Sweet. Ernest was a man of the land - he farmed the family farm in Martock and spent many winters logging the woodlots at home and away. He also worked for Mike Oulton and Bruce Spence on their farming operations. He worked for BD Stevens Group during the initial construction of Highway 101 and spent 14 years with the maintenance staff at Windsor Regional High School where he influenced many Hants County teenagers. In 1947, he married Muriel Deal from across the river. They were married 53 years until her death in June 2000. He pursued many aspects of farming and was involved with the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, the Atlantic Winter Fair and was a past president of the Hants County Exhibition. Although his education was limited due to the necessity of work at a young age, he was an avid and varied reader of both fiction and nonfiction, he followed all levels of politics, he was a keen horse show father, and his favourite time of year was Exhibition in September. Ernest and Muriel hosted amazing parties and they loved to hop in the Buick and this the road. Ernest once claimed to have driven every road in Nova Scotia. He was a member of Windsor United Church. At the age of 80, he began photographing local scenes while driving the countryside, putting together photo albums and scrapbooks, watching curling on television, and at the age of 85, he learned how to plan and win at shuffleboard. In 2003, he made the heart-wrenching decision to sell his stately home in Martock and moved to Curry's Corner and then Windsor. Ernest is survived by children, Eliza, Susan (Wayne), and Ernie; grandchildren, Michael, Jordan, and Jonathan; sisters, Elizabeth and Pauline; many beloved family members and family friends.
