EGAN, John Richard “Jack” - 97, Villa St. Joseph du Lac, Dayton, passed away March 25, 2007, in the villa. Born on October 21, 1909, in St. Andrews, P.E.I., he was a son of the late Donald and Mary (MacAskill) Egan. He was a member of St. Ambrose Cathedral. A graduate of Prince of Wales College, Prince Edward Island, Jack was a school teacher in Prince Edward Island. He later moved to Yarmouth where he worked in the seaweed business and also owned and operated Yarmouth Candy Company until his retirement in 1991. He is survived by daughters, Mary (Brian) Duncan, Cleta (Jeffery) Siscoe; son, George; brother, Adrian; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen A. (Gavel) Egan. Funeral service was held Wednesday, March 28 at 1 p.m. in St. Ambrose Cathedral, Father John MacPherson officiated. Burial took place in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. Jean E. DeLong — 82, of Albany New, Queens County, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2007 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Lapland, she was a daughter of the late Elva Zwicker. Jean was a member of A.L. Patterson Branch #87, Royal Canadian Legion, Caledonia. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and loved to cook. She is survived by sons: Clarke (Belinda) of Beach Meadows, Skip (Margaret) of Upper Rawdon, Garnet (Bonnie) and Terry (Sheila), both of Albany New; grandchildren: Bradley (Colleen), Shawn (Sherry), Jennifer (Jamie), and Michael (Lisa); sisters: Marilyn of Italy Cross, Judy of Tangier; brothers, Glen of Bridgewater, Malcolm of Italy Cross. She was predeceased by her husband, Allister; brothers, Leslie and Kendall. A graveside service was held Tuesday, March 27, in Pine Grove Cemetery, Kempt; Rev. John Boddy officiated. Delancey Leonard States – 66, of Gibson Woods, Kings County, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, March 25, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Gibson Woods, he was a son of the late Roy and Reta (Burgess) States. He had been employed throughout the area as a labourer and was known as a jack of all trades and a master of none. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing and gardening. He was very community minded and enjoyed helping others. He is survived by two daughters, Lori Viner, Port Alberni, British Columbia; Tina (Stacy) Robicheau, Centreville; three sons, Joseph (Jennifer) States, Centreville; Timothy States and Leonard Jackson, both of Gibson Woods; their mother, Yvonne Viner, Kentville; seven sisters, Joan (Eugene) Ross, Winnipeg; Gloria (Cameron) Brothers, Calgary; Dolly Upshaw, Halifax; Barbara (Aaron) Whynder, North Preston; Maxine States, Gibson Woods; Betty States, Kentville; Pauline (William) Clements, Gibson Woods; two brothers, Bayfield (Marilyn), Kentville; Clifford, Gibson Woods; 10 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa States; two brothers, Robert and Ronald. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2007. Pastor Stephen Gough and Deacon Galvin Simmonds officiated. Burial took place in the Gibson Woods Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Harriett E. Kemp - 85 of North Alton passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at home. Born in Grafton, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Emma (Rogers) Salsman. Harriett was a member of the Alton Baptist Church. She was manager at the Metropolitan in Kentville. She moved to Toronto where she worked in a drug store for 25 years, then retired and moved home to the Valley. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and was a member of the North Alton seniors group and The Willing Workers Community Club. Harriett will be sadly missed by many family and friends. She is survived by brother, Murray Salsman, Grafton; sister, Jean McMaster, Kentville. She was predeceased by her husband Norman, brothers Oran, Floyd and Perly; sisters Vivian and Hazel. Visitation for Harriett was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27 with funeral service on Wednesday, March 28 at 2:30 p.m., both from the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 5 Leverett Avenue, Kentville (902-678-2151). Rev. June Keddy officiated. Burial took place in the Berwick Cemetery, Berwick. Amero, Guy – 73 of Pugwash, born in Doucetteville, Digby Co., died March 25 in North Cumberland Hospital, Pugwash. Funeral was held in Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby. Interment in Scared Heart Cemetery, Doucetteville.

Lealand Theodore Connell - 85, Weston, Kings Co. passed away Sunday March 25, 2007, in the D.V.A. Unit of Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Nictaux, Annapolis Co. he was a son of the late Percy L. & Edna M. (Hines) Connell. Lealand was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas in England for four years during the war as a switch board operator. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch # 69, Berwick. Surviving are his wife, of 59 years, Freda Elsie (Freeman) Connell, Weston; sons, Lawrence (Pat) Connell, Waterville; Ronald (Marlene) Connell, Weston; Randall Connell, Qualicum, B.C.; daughter, Joyce (Bob) Findlay, Port Alberni, B.C.; grandchildren, Gregory, Jeff, Tracy, Rhonda, Melissa, Heather, Kristopher & Stephanie; six great-grandchildren; brother, Jack (Jean) Connell; Inglisville; sister, Dora (Vernon) Beals, Inglisville; several nieces & nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Loring Connell in infancy, Sidney, Ralph & Murray Connell; sisters, Gladys Hoffman; Irene Spears; Gertrude Smith. There was no visitation. Geneva Darling Frail — 68, of Westfield, Queens County, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007 at home, with her family by her side. Born in Westfield, she was a daughter of the late Nancy Robichaud. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Geneva was well known for her cooking and baking, and loved to share with family and friends. She enjoyed playing yahtzee, bingo, music, and loved to sing. She was a member of the Westfield United Baptist Church. She is survived by daughters: Laverne (Neal) Mansfield of Westfield, Doreen (Robert) Mansfield of Harmony, Brenda Mansfield (Roger Grezaud) of Westfield; sons: Merle “Royce” (Colleen Wiseman) of Moose Jaw, Sask., Eric (Valerie) of Westfield, Stewart (Pauline) of Pleasant River, Burton (Trina) of Regina, Sask., William (Jean) of Moose Jaw, Sask.; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Sylvia McLennan of Mississauga, Ont.; brother, Hanson Mansfield of Westfield. Irving Theodore Parnell — 92, of Liverpool, formerly of Mill Village, Queens County, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007, in the Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, Queens County. Born in North West Bay, he was a son of the late Walter and Pheobe (Gates) Parnell. Irving worked for the Bowater Mersey Paper Company as a pipe fitter for 29 years, retiring in 1979. He was a former trustee for Bethany United Church in Mill Village. He enjoyed salmon fishing, hunting and raising Christmas trees. He is survived by daughters, Charlotte (Robert) Rhodenizer of Timberlea, Darlene (Wayne) Trimm of Mill Village; sons, Charles (Emily) of Prince George, BC, Blaine of MacKenzie, BC; grandchildren: Shelley, Marlene, Darlene, Darren, Glen, David, Carla, Megan, Amber; great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Justin, Kianna, Curtis, Jessica, Christina; sisters, Blanche Veinot of Sandy Cove, Abby Waters of Milton, Massachusetts; brothers, Clyde of Yarmouth, Lawrence of Liverpool. Jane Katherine Murphy – 50, of Kentville, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007 at home, with family and friends by her side. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Philip and Verna (Smith) Murphy. Jane was an accomplished musician and shared her talents as a Music for Young Children teacher for 25 years, and as a piano and flute teacher for more than 30 years. Jane was the director of the Queens of Kings, the Sanctuary choir, and the men’s choir at Kentville United Baptist Church. In keeping with Jane’s passion for children, music and her strong spiritual background, she had a vision to create a children’s choir that would allow children from the community to celebrate their faith through song and drama. In 1992, Jane’s vision was realized and Kids for Christ came to be and continued to hold an important place in Jane’s life. Jane’s hobbies included just about everything from tole painting, stained-glass work, and her recent new found passion for scrapbooking and quilting. Jane volunteered as a coordinator for the children’s program for the Atlantic Baptist Convention, Sunday school teacher and member of the Gateway Mission Group. For the past four years, Jane promoted her community as the manager of the Kentville Visitor Information Centre. Jane is survived by her children, Brock and Drew Wallace, their father, Greg Wallace and her constant companion and special friend, Sue Cox. Jane is also survived by her sisters, Leslie Murphy, Betty (Michael) Williams, Lyndsay Murphy and Patti (Matthias) Enders; her beloved nieces and nephews, Sean, Michelle, Meghan, Siobhan, Keith, Elizabeth, Jack, Lilli and Sam. Many, many family and friends will truly miss Jane. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2007 in the Kentville United Baptist Church. Reverend John McNally officiated. A private family interment took place in the Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville. Donations in memory may be made to the ALS Society or toward a special fund to support children’s music training through the Kentville United Baptist Church. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to those dedicated friends that donated so much of their time to Jane’s care. Calvin Earl “Cal” Milne – 83, of New Minas, Kings County, passed away on Monday, March 26, 2007 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Preston, Halifax County, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Ruth (Green) Milne. He owned and operated Cal Milne’s Autobody in New Minas for 46 years and also operated the Double C Tack Shop in New Minas. Cal initiated the first Cub Pack in New Minas and became a Gilwell Scout. He raised horses and for a number of years spent time on the show circuit. He also enjoyed woodworking and was a longtime supporter and friend of the New Minas Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Dorothy Walker; a daughter, Charlotte (Gary) Rafuse, New Minas; two sons, Bryce (Sylvia), Grand Pré and Rex (Elizabeth), North West Territories; a daughter-in-law, Helen Milne, Kentville; three sisters, Ina Palmer, Berwick; Dorothy (Ken) Barron and Carol Anne (Doug) Anthony, both of New Minas; three brothers, Gerald “Gerry” (Pauline), Kentville; Donald “Don” (Jean), Granville Ferry; Stanley “Sam”, New Minas; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Brian; a sister, Shirley Fraser; two brothers, Lawrence “Lonny” and Ronald. Visitation was held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2007. Reverend Robert Billings officiated. A reception followed in the reception room. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County.
