Berry, Keith Ronald - 79, Clementsport, passed away on March 21, 2007 at the Annapolis Community Health Centre after a lengthy illness. When Keith was first diagnosed with terminal cancer, he very practically set his course. He said, “I’ll run as long as I can; when I can’t run I’ll walk and when I can’t walk, I’ll crawl.” Physically, he followed his course with courage, conviction and always thinking of those around him. Mentally, he ran the full distance. He was a son of the late Walter and Hilda (Eisener) Berry. A lifelong resident of Clementsport, he was able to pass along much of the community’s history to the historical society. Keith worked at Larche’s Machine Shop for over two decades before opening his own successful machine shop and welding business under the name of Keith Berry & Son Ltd. in Clementsport. On countless occasions, he enthusiastically told of his love for his work. He enjoyed designing and building projects including his tree farmer, a jet boat, stoves, berry cat, wood splitters and a sailing catamaran for canoes. After his retirement, he continued working at projects and built a first class road through his woodlot and rebuilt a bulldozer. His work was done with great pride. Keith was very active in his square dancing and snowmobile clubs; Clements Historical Society, The Order of Good Cheer and The Good Neighbours Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, loved the woods and enjoyed passing on his skills to his children and grandchildren. Keith and Shirley and their many visitors marveled at the wonderful view of the Annapolis Basin and the many beautiful sunsets witnessed from their home. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley (VanTassel) Berry, his son Ricky (Edith) Berry, Clementsport; his daughter Susan (Larry) Woodman, New Minas; grandchildren Peter (Jackie) Woodman, Blairmore, Alberta; Billy (Erica) Berry, Clementsport and Jonathan (Tessah) Woodman, Wolfville. Herbert Kitchener Manthorne — Age 93, Liverpool, Queens County, NS, March 19, 2007. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their dear father, loving grandfather and proud great-grandfather at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS. Born Oct. 25, 1914 in Port Medway, Queens County, NS, he was a son of the late Charles and Robina (Parke) Manthorne. Throughout his life, his love and devotion to family, friends and Liverpool Baptist Church were clearly demonstrated. His love of skating and his skill at doing so, made him a popular figure on the ice over the years and much in demand as a skating partner. An avid Ham Radio operator early in life, he was known as “VEIABB” and his voice was well recognized over the airwaves until the loss of his eyesight in his 80’s. He is fondly remembered by many who joined up with him for his annual trek along the shores of Lake Rossignol to harvest cranberries. Sharing this tradition with so many friends and family was a highlight of his life, his last trip at the age of 90. Demonstrating a passionate interest in his birthplace, his mind was a wealth of information to those seeking and documenting Port Medway history and genealogy. His collections and mementos were so precious to him, sharing them with so many others until the sudden loss of his sight, which changed his life so dramatically. Known to so many friends as “Herb”, he became so much a part of the Liverpool scene as he faithfully walked across town to join his many friends at McDonald’s for their daily coffee and friendship sessions. He truly loved the feelings of warmth that he felt from the McDonald’s employees and his wonderful caring friends. A special thank-you to all of you — you know who you are. His trusted companion…his harmonica, was always with him and he loved playing for so many people. Moving to Liverpool, as a young man he started working at Thompson Bros., Steel and Engines, Rossignol Sales and Service and then with Rossignol Sales (GM Dealership) until his retirement as Stock Room Manager in 1980. His active participation in Ground Search and Rescue presented him with many challenges over the years, enabling him to use his skills as a Ham Radio operator to assist others within the organization. He is survived by his daughter Bette Ann (Jim) Wigglesworth (Halifax, NS); son David (Sheila) Manthorne (Dartmouth, NS); grandchildren: Tara Lee (Hines), Todd (Wigglesworth), Shelley and Jill Manthorne; great- grandchildren: Kali, Rees (Hines), Justin and Logan (Wigglesworth). Also surviving is sister-in-law, Evelyn Manthorne, and many very special nieces and cousins. Our father was predeceased by our mother, Vida (Veinot) Manthorne, and by his brother, Charles Eric Manthorne. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 4, in Liverpool United Baptist Church; Rev. Greg Denton officiating. A private family interment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery, Port Medway. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Liverpool United Baptist Church or the charity of choice. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com.
