March 18, 2007 to March 24, 2007 Herbert Kitchener Manthorne — 93, of Liverpool, Queens County. It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of their dear father, loving grandfather and proud great-grandfather at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS, on Monday, March 19, 2007. Born Oct. 25, 1914 in Port Medway, Queens County, he was a son of the late Charles and Robina (Parke) Manthorne. Throughout his life his love and devotion to family, friends and Liverpool Baptist Church were clearly demonstrated. His love of skating and his skill at doing so, made him a popular figure on the ice over the years and much in demand as a skating partner. An avid Ham Radio operator early in life, he was known as “VEIABB” and his voice was well recognized over the airwaves until the loss of his eyesight in his 80’s. Fondly remembered by many who joined up with him for his annual trek along the shores of Lake Rossignol to harvest cranberries. Sharing this tradition with so many friends and family was a highlight of his life, his last trip at the age of 90. Demonstrating a passionate interest in his birthplace, his mind was a wealth of information to those seeking and documenting Port Medway history and genealogy. His collections and mementos were so precious to him, sharing them with so many others until the sudden loss of his sight, which changed his life so dramatically. Known to so many friends as “Herb”, he became so much a part of the Liverpool scene as he faithfully walked across town to join his many friends at McDonald’s for their daily coffee and friendship sessions. He truly loved the feelings of warmth that he felt from the McDonald’s employees and his wonderful caring friends. A special thank-you to all of you — you know who you are. His trusted companion, his harmonica, was always with him and he loved playing for so many people. Moving to Liverpool, as a young man he started working at Thompson Bros., Steel and Engines, Rossignol Sales and Service and then with Rossignol Sales (GM Dealership) until his retirement as Stock Room Manager in 1980. His active participation in Ground Search and Rescue presented him with many challenges over the years, enabling him to use his skills as a Ham Radio operator to assist others within the organization. He is survived by his daughter, Bette Ann (Jim) Wigglesworth of Halifax; son, David (Sheila) Manthorne of Dartmouth; grandchildren: Tara Lee (Hines), Todd (Wigglesworth), Shelley and Jill Manthorne; great-grandchildren: Kali, Rees (Hines), Justin and Logan (Wigglesworth); sister-in-law, Evelyn Manthorne; and many very special nieces and cousins. Our father was predeceased by our mother, Vida (Veinot) Manthorne, and by his brother, Charles Eric Manthorne. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A private family interment held in Greenwood Cemetery, Port Medway. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Liverpool United Baptist Church or the charity of choice. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com.

In retirement, he loved fishing with his son Don, watching his grandchildren in all of their activities, the Acadia Axeman hockey team (a long time season ticket holder), and, most of all, walking, reading, and traveling with the love of his life, Phyllis. At his request, Don has been cremated. Due to Phyllis’ injuries, a Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date, to be announced. When they were young, Don often read poetry to his children. He always ended with Abou Ben Adhem, which he knew by heart. In that poem, the Angel of the Lord asks Abou how he wants to be remembered and Abou replies, “Write me as one who loves his fellow man.” The poem ends “The next night … Ben Adhem’s name led all the rest.” In the schools where he taught and the communities where he lived, Don exemplified Abou Ben Adhem’s philosophy.
