A Grade 12 student from Shelburne Regional High School won first place and a $1,000 Saint Mary’s University entrance bursary with her regional science fair entry.
Kendra d’Eon’s ‘Study on the Physics of Show Jumping’ placed first over close to 100 entries from tri-county schools in the fifth annual science fair at NSCC Burridge campus on March 22.
The project addressed the formula required to adjust the speed and approach to jumps in order to win competitions.
“It was fun because now I can use this as a coach or as a competitor,” said d’Eon.
During her research, while trying to determine the angle at which a horse jumped, she tried contacting an international course designer.
The designer, Arno Gego, called her from Germany and told her she had chosen a very complex topic.
“He thought I was a university student,” said d’Eon.
Her entry was the only one in the Grade 11 and 12 category.
The second place overall winner, Daniel Rogers, a Grade 8 Yarmouth Junior High student, won with his project on pollution in Yarmouth.
The third place overall winner, Julia Martin, a Grade 10 St. Mary’s Bay Academy student, won with her project comparing homemade weather instruments with nature and folklore.
D’Eon, Rogers, and Martin will be competing in the National Canada Wide Science Fair in TTri-County Regional School Board Regional Science Fair Winners
