Lack of garbage cans in town
Letter to the Yarmouth Vanguard
On a very nice spring-like day I decided to take my dog for a walk around town, Spring was in the air, the sidewalks were clear of snow and people were out enjoying the day. After walking a bit, I stopped to clean up after my dog. We continued on our walk and all the while I was looking for a garbage can to drop off my little bag. Imagine my surprise when after approximately 40 minutes of walking around town I was unable to find a trash can.

The only garbage can I could find was in front of Tim Hortons and since there was a not so friendly looking dog tied alone ton the post, I decided to detour the area.

Needless to say this just baffled me. Downtown Yarmouth and no garbage cans? I fully understand that I’m responsible for cleaning up after my dog and if it means carrying my bag home then so be it but what I don’t understand is if I were to stop in one of the stores for a snack, I’m supposed to do what with the garbage?

I’m assuming there is a bylaw against littering but In don’t agree that it’s reasonable to expect someone to carry their trash around simply because a town doesn’t want to supply garbage cans. In a town that is trying hard to encourage tourism and business in the downtown one would think there would be the simple convenience as garbage cans. I guess if the town isn’t prepared to provide the basic necessity of garbage cans I might not feel like doing my part to keep the town clean and not be so willing to try to follow the bylaws against littering or picking up after my dog.
