Salvage veteran Murray Allen honoured
The Yarmouth Veteran Firefighters’ Association paid tribute to Salvage Corp veteran Murray Allen last Monday evening as they hosted their yearly dinner to nearly 60 veterans and special guests at the Yarmouth fire hall.
A delicious lobster dinner prepared by Paul O’Connell and staff was followed by draws and the award presented to Murray by the association’s vice president Danny Amirault. Among the guests were Murray’s daughter Karen Condon and Murray’s grandson John Condon from Truro. Many veterans expressed their appreciation as they met with old friends.

THIRD HOUSE FIRE

The Yarmouth Fire Department experienced its third house fire since Feb. 28 when it responded to 10 Horton St., last Tuesday, March 13 at 8:31 p.m. The suspicious fire was contained to the second floor of the wooden duplex as a result of quick work by the department. Investigation was turned over to the RCMP who later made an arrest.

VETERANS IN HOSPITAL

Sorry to report that two YFD veterans are in the Yarmouth hospital. Neptune vet Rene Surette has been there for several weeks and former Chief Dave Leblanc was admitted one week ago. Our best wishes to both for a speedy recovery.

ICE SLED TRAINING

The newly purchased ice rescue sled was put through its paces on Saturday, March 10 on the thick ice of Lake Milo. After a good size hole was made (ice about a foot thick), a member wearing a submersion suit got into the water and waited for the one-man sled to make its way along the ice to make the rescue. This new equipment can be used on ice or in water, can be transported very quickly on Unit 26 and be set up for action in a very short time.

DATE IN HISTORY

March 22, 1863 – Even before the Town had fire hydrants in place, firefighters had difficulty in getting water. The department responded to a carriage shop fire on Brown Street. As they attempted to draft water from the well at the head of the street, it was found that the trap door to the well was frozen hard, making it necessary to cut a hole in the platform. Because of this, a number of buildings were either lost or badly damaged. None of the buildings were insured.
